⚠️ NOTICE OF PARKING LOT CLOSURE ⚠️

Please note that from September 28 – October 30, 2026 the parking lot at the Visitor Information Centre of Kouchibouguac National Park will be closed for resurfacing. This work is necessary to address deteriorating conditions and ongoing drainage issues.

During this time, visitors are asked to visit the park entrance kiosk, to obtain information and purchase park passes.

⌚ Hours for the kiosks daily are: 8:30 am to 6:00 pm.

🚙 For those arriving with large campers or recreational vehicles:
Please proceed directly to the kiosk at the South Kouchibouguac Campground, to register and obtain information.

📣 Attention New Brunswick teachers and educators!

**UPDATE: We've run out of available spots for this fall. Thank you all for your interest! Please contact us at [email protected] for inquiries about spring school programming.

We will be responding to requests on a first come, first served basis.

🌎🔍Happy World Water Monitoring Day! 🌎🔍

Both national parks in New Brunswick assess water quality as part of their ecological monitoring programs. Kouchibouguac National Park monitors streams both within and outside park boundaries and Fundy National Park monitors 16 sites within the park.

Chemical parameters are assessed for rivers and streams, to ensure acceptable levels. Temperature data is also captured. If waters warm too much, for too long, or if it happens too often, many species will not have the ability to toletrate the conditions.

How else do we measure water quality?

💦 Bog well monitoring tests water parameters such as oxygen, pH and salinity
💦 Macroinvertebrate collection – insects living in the water can indicate good or poor water health
💦 Monitoring Atlantic Salmon populations and coastal lagoon fish communities also provide insight into the park’s aquatic ecosystem health.

From chemistry to tiny aquatic insects to fish, there are many ways to understand the health of our waters. 💧🌿

🔎 A closer look at Kouchibouguac’s nesting Common Terns

Kouchibouguac boasts the largest Common Tern colony in Canada, and one of the largest in North America! After the breeding season, these birds migrate thousands of kilometres to winter in Central and South America.

Staff have conducted annual nest counts since the early 1970s. These long-term counts help us track the health of the park’s coastal ecosystems.

Over the last two decades, we have observed a sustained decline in nest numbers and the average number of eggs per nest. While global populations are considered stable, local breeding populations remain vulnerable to environmental changes, including:

🦤 Competition from breeding gulls
🚶‍➡️ Human disturbance
🌧️ Extreme heat, severe weather and storm surges

Despite these challenges, we have some encouraging news from 2026:

📈 Almost 6,000 nests were counted, 1,200 more than in 2025.

👏 For the first time in four years, the colony showed strong signs of recovery, reaching its highest nest count since 2022.
