St. Thomas commuters: Hwy 3 road work begins August 17 🚧

If you regularly travel along Hwy 3, be prepared for lane reductions and delays beginning Monday, August 17.

The Ministry of Transportation (MTO) will be completing road work along approximately 13.13 km of Hwy 3, from Edward Street in St. Thomas to Holland Avenue in Aylmer.

📅 Start date: August 17, 2026
⏱️ Duration: Approximately 45 working days

Hwy 3 is planned to remain open throughout the project, but reduced lanes are expected to slow traffic substantially. Please consider using an alternate route where possible, or give yourself extra time to reach your destination.

Please drive with caution through the work zone and follow all posted traffic signs and directions.

A Public Meeting will be held on Monday, September 14, 2026 at 6 p.m. to consider a proposed Zoning By-law Amendment for lands at 417 Wellington Street and 275 Highview Drive.

The application proposes changes to the existing zoning provisions to facilitate the development of two 10-storey mixed-use buildings and two one-storey commercial buildings. The proposed amendment would increase the maximum permitted building height and reduce the minimum lot area.

St. Thomas Police Service has successfully transitioned to Next Generation 9-1-1.

The new system provides a more secure, reliable and resilient platform for receiving emergency calls and prepares our Communications Centre for future emergency communications capabilities.

This transition follows four years of planning and technical work. We thank our Communications Centre staff, Information Technology team, emergency service and technology partners, the City of St. Thomas and the Government of Ontario for helping make it possible.

A major milestone for St. Thomas-Elgin! 🏠

Between January and June 2026, 79 people moved from homelessness into housing — while 69 people became homeless during that same period. For the first time, more people are exiting homelessness than entering it here, putting us ahead of most communities across Canada.

Our By-Name List is also down 34% from this time last year.

This is proof our coordinated, community-wide approach is working, and that a functional end to homelessness in St. Thomas-Elgin by 2027 is within reach.
