We recognize that the former hospital holds a special place in our community's history.

As demolition moves forward, we've received questions about whether residents can enter the site to salvage bricks, doors, architectural pieces, or other materials. Please note that for health and safety reasons, public access to the active demolition site is not permitted, and requests to remove items cannot be accommodated.

While the buildings are beyond their useful life and pose a health and safety risk in their current state, efforts are being made to retain elements of the buildings and digitally document the buildings prior to demolition. Selected stone carvings will be carefully salvaged as part of the demolition process, and a comprehensive LiDAR survey has been completed to document the interiors and exteriors of the buildings.

These preserved elements and digital documentation will contribute to future commemoration initiatives as the site is transformed to support housing and community uses.

We appreciate the community's interest in honouring the hospital's legacy while helping us maintain a safe work site.

We've seen a number of comments and received questions regarding parking during the CALIPSO Car Show this past weekend and would like to provide additional context and clarify a few details.

We are very sorry for anyone who had a negative experience.

Municipal staff were on site to provide information, answer questions, and assist visitors with parking information. Three parking tickets were issued in the parking lot during the event, and none were issued to classic car participants. Staff reminded attendees that parking fees applied to all vehicles using the municipal lot, as free parking had not been arranged as part of the event.

We understand that some participants chose to leave the car show, and we understand that this was disappointing for participants, organizers, and attendees.

Port Stanley welcomes thousands of visitors during the summer months, and the Municipality recognizes the importance of balancing the needs of special events while ensuring parking remains available and accessible for everyone enjoying the community. To help accommodate additional vehicles during CALIPSO, the West Pier parking lot was expanded a few weeks before the event to provide increased capacity. Free parking continues to be available on streets, on a first-come, first-served basis.

The Municipality of Central Elgin appreciates the many volunteers, organizers, businesses and visitors who help make special events successful. Events like CALIPSO provide significant benefits to our community, and we value the opportunity to work collaboratively with organizers to support successful events while ensuring municipal bylaws are applied fairly.

If you have any questions or would like to discuss this further, we're happy to speak with you. Please contact Don MacLeod, 519-631-4860.
