The national homelessness picture is grim.

In Ontario and Quebec, the homelessness rate went up by 65% between 2020 and last year.

We've seen some encouraging data at the St. Thomas level with the number of people coming out of homelessness larger than the number of people becoming homeless in the first half of this year: however, there were still dozens of new people moving from housing to living on the streets.

We need to work with municipalities, such as St. Thomas, that have developed their own systems and programs.

We also need to stop enabling drug addiction, which is inextricably linked to homelessness. This means more treatment and recovery, not turning a blind eye to open drug use and supplying free drugs.

And we need more housing.
