Just in time for cooler evenings and the first signs of fall, the Category 1 campfire prohibition in the Kamloops Fire Centre will be lifted effective noon on Thursday, September 3.

Recent changes in conditions mean residents and visitors can once again enjoy a campfire — but please continue to use care. Wildfire risk hasn’t disappeared simply because summer is winding down.

A few important reminders:

🔥 Campfires must be no larger than 0.5 metres high by 0.5 metres wide.

💧 Never leave a campfire unattended and make sure it is completely extinguished before leaving.

🚫 Category 2 and Category 3 open fires remain prohibited throughout the Kamloops Fire Centre.

📍 Local governments may have their own restrictions, so always check local regulations before lighting a fire.

After a long wildfire season, this is welcome news as we head toward cooler fall weather. Enjoy those evenings around the fire, and thank you to everyone who continues to do their part to keep our communities and forests safe.

It was great chatting with everyone who stopped by our booth at the Salmon Arm Fair, and with those who came out for Saturday’s parade despite the rain.

Events like these are a great reminder of what makes our community special, the people who show up, get involved, and take the time to connect.

Thank you to everyone who stopped by to say hello, share a thought, or simply enjoyed the Fair. It was great to see so many familiar faces and meet some new ones along the way!

Conversations and concerns regarding DRIPA have been one of the primary topics constituents have wanted to discuss with me. Meanwhile, they’ve had no real say regarding it.

That’s about to change.

A petition to repeal DRIPA has been approved by Elections BC. To succeed, it needs signatures from 10% of registered voters in each of B.C.’s 93 electoral districts. Signing runs October 26, 2026 to January 25, 2027 — if it passes that threshold, it goes to a vote in the Legislature.

It’s time to organize, get signatures and be heard.

Another regulation. Another consultant. Another fee.

CSRD's new soil-disposal policy will require additional testing and Qualified Professional certification for some projects, with new tipping fees still to come.

We should absolutely keep contaminated soil out of inappropriate landfill areas but before government adds more costs to construction, property cleanups and local businesses, taxpayers deserve to see the price tag and provide input.

Environmental responsibility shouldn't become an excuse for endless red tape.

The province has reinstated water flow restrictions on the Salmon River to help Chinook salmon get through a critical part of their lifecycle. Once again, at the cost of irrigation access for local farmers and ranchers.

There are sound reasons to defend both positions. What's really needed is long-term solutions so we don't have this debate in the future.

Every September, thousands of Canadians take part in the Canada Army Run — a run, walk, or roll event that brings communities together to support the Canadian Armed Forces and honour the people who serve.

This year's virtual race runs Sept. 4–25, so you can take part right here in Salmon Arm–Shuswap, at your own pace, and still be part of something national. Funds raised go toward supporting Canadian Armed Forces members and their families.
