Our MP and colleagues calling on the government to provide resources to Operation PALACI for avalanche control unless a alternative is established.

For 65 years, the Canadian Armed Forces have played a critical role in avalanche control at Rogers Pass, helping keep one of Canada’s most important transportation corridors open and safe.

If a disaster were to cause the corridor to close, the economic impact would be devastating; over 4,000 vehicles and 40 trains pass through Rogers Pass every day, and every hour it's closed would cost the Canadian economy an estimated $3 million.

Canadians expect their government to strengthen emergency preparedness and to ensure that regions and corridors like this one are always protected if a disaster occurs.

That is why Conservatives have been calling on the Liberal government since May to ensure the corridor remains protected. If no effective alternative can be established for avalanche control operations at Rogers Pass, then Operation PALACI must continue to ensure that this critical corridor, and other economic and transportation corridors across Canada, have the resources necessary to withstand emergencies and remain operational.

25 years later we mark the 911 terrorist attacks on Canada's closest neighbors. Over 3,000 died including 24 Canadians. We honour all first responders who answered the call that day and every day.

We cannot accept a continuation of MVAs, fatalities and closures. I have written the provincial Minister of Transportation and Transit, asking what is being done to assess and expand Highway 1, and what actions are underway to assess enforcement.
