So you want to make a native prairie garden in your yard, but don’t know which plants to pick, or where to put them? We recommend getting to know native plants in their natural setting, throughout the seasons. Take a walk on the wild side - go to a remnant of prairie or a natural area that matches the conditions in your yard, so that you can understand how it can all come together.

Here are some recommended places to go in and around Saskatoon. If your yard has a few different conditions, you may need to visit more than one!

Sandy/dry/sun – Cranberry Flats
Woodland/moist/shade – Beaver Creek & Meewasin River Valley
Prairie/dry/sun – Northeast Swale

For additional guidance, check out our adventures to plan your native plant walk - https://wildaboutsaskatoon.org/adventures/

You likely know your [human] neighbours: the couple with a bunch of grandkids and the woman on the corner who aces Halloween decorations. But do you know your wild neighbours?

Our is filled with urban wildlife. If you know what to look for, signs of their activities and families are everywhere. The presence of wildlife in a city raises important question: How do we design our cities, educate residents, and live with wild animals? University of Saskatchewan PhD student Katie Harris is helping to address some of these questions with her Saskatoon-based network of urban wildlife cameras.

In this Nature City Adventure, we invite you to get out and about. Look for signs that some of the wildlife Katie’s cameras have photographed are near you or perhaps commuting through your neighbourhood. You can find this guide and more details about Katie's research on our website: https://wildaboutsaskatoon.org/urban-wildlife/

Joanne Blythe writes:
"We are standing in a rolling prairie on a summer day. I breath in the smell of warm grass and sunlight. Those deceptively delicate harebells from her dress are blooming amid the grass along with a blaze of meadow blazingstars. There is an aspen bluff to our right, leaves flickering, talking amongst themselves. There are bees and tiny butterflies whose names I do not know."

It takes courage to let yourself fall in love with the living world–the shining wind, the pink-purple-blue of the blossoms, that glittering green bee. In our place and our time, loving the world also means carrying a mantle of fear and grief. So much has already been lost; so much remains to protect and restore. It takes heart to put on that cloak and speak for nature. If you haven’t already connected with your local community of nature lovers, find your people. They are waiting for you to join them.

And then I hear a voice or is it voices? Is it the woman? The aspens (they do like to talk), those blazing stars, the harebells ringing, those butterflies fluttering by?

Grab a cup of tea and enjoy this gallery of wild words by some of Saskatchewan and Canada's most gifted writers.
