The other day, we received a particularly exciting intake: a Virginia rail! While not the first of its kind to come through our doors, it's always a treat to see these secretive birds up close and personal.

This individual was found roaming around near the Hilton Garden Inn in downtown Saskatoon, where he was able to be easily scooped up and brought into care for a check-in: red flags galore. 🚩

This time of year, migrating birds run into all new challenges: figuratively and literally. In the case of this rail, we suspect that it fell victim to the ever-deceptive window reflection on the building and ended up with a bad headache and was disoriented. This is a common problem for this time of year, and one that can be easily remedied with window deterrents such as decals.

For now, this Virginia rail will receive some necessary TLC and will hopefully be released again soon in time to complete its migration south for the winter.

Thank you to everyone who reached out with cherry and apple branches for our beaver. We have enough now and are so grateful for everyone's generosity!

We are looking for STRAW bales to line our outdoor enclosures in preparation for the incoming cold months!

As the night air gets cooler, we must ensure that our outdoor enclosures are padded with plenty of leaves, straw, and other naturally insulating materials to keep our over-wintering patients warm as they recover with us.

With these naturally insulating materials comes the need for regular maintenance and upkeep, including disposing of dirty or soiled leaves and straw as often as necessary. This also means we have already begun to dwindle our remaining supply from the summer and will need to stock up for the coming winter!

If you have any straw bales you do not need or know of someone who may have straw bales to give, please call or text 306-281-0554 or message us on Facebook or Instagram to arrange a drop-off time. We would be most grateful!!! 💙
