June is Indigenous History Month, a time to honour the stories, identity, and lived experiences that shape who we are as Métis people.
In this segment, Elders Darcy Kelly and Jim Belhumeur speak to a reality many Métis families know well. They share the difficult truth of growing up Métis during a time when discrimination was common, when being visibly or openly Métis meant being judged, excluded, or looked down upon. For many, Métis identity was hidden as a way to protect families from harm.
These stories are hard to hear, however, they are essential. They remind us how far our Nation has come, and how much strength it took to get here.
Both Elders speak with honesty and courage about reclaiming their identity, embracing who they are, and choosing pride over silence. Their message is clear: being Métis is something to celebrate.
Our Elders hold the living memory of our Nation, offering the wisdom that helps us heal and grow.
This video is part of a four‑part series we will be sharing throughout June featuring Métis Elders.
As we reflect on our past, we honour the resilience of our people, the truth of our Elders, and the pride we carry as Métis today.
