Parks Canada administers 4 national historic sites in Saskatchewan, each with their own unique contribution to the story of Canada. From the role of the North West Mounted Police in the west at Fort Walsh and Fort Battleford, to the story of the Métis at Batoche and the importance of the early farmsteads like Motherwell Homestead, Saskatchewan is home to some amazing natural and cultural landscapes.

The gates are swinging open and the boots are back on the ground 👢
Fort Walsh National Historic Site has officially opened for the 2026 season, and staff have been busy dusting things off and getting ready for visitors.
Whether you’re here for the stories, the scenery, or just to see if you’ve got what it takes to survive 1870s frontier life (spoiler: it involved a lot less Wi-Fi), we’ve got you covered.
So pack your curiosity, bring your sense of adventure, and maybe practice your best “stern but fair” law enforcement face.
See you at the fort—history is waiting, and it’s looking pretty good for its age.

The doors are open, the chores are calling, and the prairie is ready to show off 🌾
Motherwell Homestead National Historic Site is officially open for the 2026 season!
Come see what life was like when “daily routine” meant tending the garden, feeding the animals, and definitely not hitting snooze five times. The house is polished, the yard is looking sharp, and the chickens are… well, still judging everyone.
Plan your visit today.
We’ll be here, keeping the homestead running—just like it’s 1900.

Hoofprints in morning dew, meadowlarks rising, our prairie pastures tell a story. Step into the Year of Rangelands and celebrate our prairie home. 🌾❤️

Historically, prairie farms used mixed practices to make the most of the land. Not all land is made to grow wheat; some is better suited to grow mixes of different grasses. This type of land is called Rangelands.

Rangelands cover half the world's land. They are home to pastures for cattle to graze grass. They are also home to hay crops to grow grass that is stored for later feeding, allowing the land to rest and recover after a summer of grazing. The grass can preserve its nutrients to be used for optimal growth in the following grazing season.

The top of the red barn is designed to store hay. Hay was gathered in summer and used to feed the cattle and horses throughout the fall and winter. Check it out the next time you are visiting the site!
