NOTICE
SOO TOWNSHIP RESIDENTS

On May 29, 2026 the Soo Township Board approved an Ordinance Amendment (2026-01) to affirm an enforcing agency and designate regulated flood hazard areas under the provisions of the State Construction Code Act, Act No. 230 of the Public Acts of 1972. New FEMA Flood Insurance Rate Maps (FIRM) have resulted in the need to amend Ordinance 2014-01.

SOO TOWNSHIP RESIDENTS


The Soo Township Board will hold a Special Board Meeting on Friday May 29, 2026 at 9:00 am to hear public comment and discuss an Ordinance Amendment that was made necessary by new FEMA Flood Insurance Rate Maps (FIRM). The meeting will occur at the Soo Township Hall, 639 3 ½ Mile Rd., Sault Ste Marie, MI 49783

The ordinance amendment would affirm an enforcing agency and designate regulated flood hazard areas under the provisions of the State Construction Code Act, Act No. 230 of the Public Acts of 1972. The new ordinance amendment (2026-01) would amend Ordinance 2014-01.

SOO TOWNSHIP
SPRING CLEAN-UP (2026)

Soo Township Residents may take their trash to GFL (formerly Smith Sanitation), 3239 W. M28, Brimley, Michigan on the following dates:

Monday, June 1st thru Friday, June 5th from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 pm

Soo Township will pay for one 350-pound load per household. Property owners will be responsible for any additional weight over the 350lb limit (8 cents per pound). All loads must be covered. There will be no tires, yard waste, styrofoam or hazardous waste materials accepted. Appliances will be accepted (there is an additional charge of $15 for an appliance that contains freon that the resident will be responsible for). The weather finally allowed us to have our new absentee ballot return box installed! Going forward please return your ballots and any other election related materials to the new box.

The old drop box will remain and should be used for tax payments and general correspondence.

SOO TOWNSHIP RESIDENTS

Notice is hereby given that the Public Accuracy Test for the May 5, 2026 Special Election has been scheduled for Friday April 17, 2026 at 10 a.m. at the Soo Township Hall, 639 3½ Mile Road.

The Public Accuracy Test of the Dominion Voting Imagecast System is conducted to demonstrate that the computer programs used to record and count the votes cast at the election meets the requirements of the law.

The Soo Township Planning Commission will hold a Public Meeting on Tuesday, May 5th 2026, at 7:00 p.m. at the Soo Township Hall, 639 3 ½ Mile Road to gain input on the application of a special use permit for the building of a cell phone tower within the Northern Sand & Gravel pits located off Radar Rd in Soo Twp.

Should any interested party have comments on the proposed Special Use Permit and cannot attend the meeting, please address them in writing, to Allen Walther, Township Clerk, 639 3 ½ Mile Rd, Sault Ste. Marie, MI 49783, prior to date of meeting.
