August 9 marks International Day of the World's Indigenous Peoples, a day to celebrate the strength, resilience, cultures, languages, and contributions of Indigenous Peoples around the globe.

Today also serves as a reminder that Indigenous communities continue to face significant inequalities, including barriers to safe, affordable, and culturally appropriate housing. At NICHI, we believe that Indigenous-led housing solutions are essential to building stronger, healthier communities and creating lasting change.

As we honour this day, we celebrate the knowledge, leadership, and traditions of First Nations, Inuit, and Métis Peoples, while reaffirming our commitment to advancing Indigenous housing through collaboration, respect, and self-determination.

Le 9 août marque la Journée internationale des peuples autochtones, une occasion de célébrer la force, la résilience, les cultures, les langues et les contributions des peuples autochtones partout dans le monde.

Cette journée nous rappelle également que les communautés autochtones continuent de faire face à d’importantes inégalités, notamment des obstacles à l’accès à un logement sûr, abordable et culturellement adapté. Chez NICHI, nous croyons que les solutions de logement dirigées par les autochtones sont essentielles pour bâtir des communautés plus fortes, tout en créant un changement durable.

En cette journée de reconnaissance, nous célébrons le savoir, le leadership et les traditions des Premières Nations, des Inuits et des Métis, tout en réaffirmant notre engagement pour faire progresser les solutions de logement autochtone grâce à la collaboration, au respect et à l’autodétermination.

As wildfires continue to impact First Nations, Inuit, and Métis communities from coast to coast to coast, our thoughts are with everyone who has been forced from their homes and communities.

To the families facing uncertainty, the frontline responders, and the communities supporting one another, we stand with you.

Safe, culturally appropriate housing will be an essential part of helping communities recover and rebuild. NICHI remains committed to listening, learning, and working alongside our members and partners to support Indigenous-led housing solutions when communities are ready.

Great News!

Yesterday, we celebrated the opening of Na-Me-Res 20 new supportive homes in Leslieville (ON). was honoured to attend the ribbon-cutting ceremony.

The Na-Me-Res development reflects the strength and impact of community-led, For Indigenous, By Indigenous ( ) solutions, creating safe, supportive homes and strengthening the community for generations to come.

NICHI was pleased to attend the Assembly of First Nations (AFN) meetings, where important conversations took place on advancing Indigenous housing priorities and strengthening partnerships across the country.

Pictured is NICHI CEO John Gordon with Regional Chief Brendan Mitchell, who oversees the Housing and Infrastructure portfolio. Opportunities to connect with Indigenous leaders and partners help ensure the voices of urban, rural, and northern Indigenous housing providers continue to be represented in national discussions.

We look forward to continuing these conversations and working collaboratively to advance Indigenous-led housing solutions.

NICHI a été ravi de participer à l'Assemblée générale annuelle 2026 de l'Assemblée des Premières Nations! D'importantes discussions ont eu lieu sur l'avancement des priorités en matière de logement autochtone et le renforcement de partenariat à travers le pays.

En photo d'accompagnement, le Directeur général de NICHI, John Gordon, en compagnie du Chef régional Brendan Mitchell, responsable du portefeuille du logement et des infrastructures. Ces occasions d’échanger avec des leaders et des partenaires autochtones contribuent à faire en sorte que la voix des fournisseurs de logements autochtones en milieux urbain, rural et nordique (U.R.N.) continue d’être représentée sur la scène nationale.
