Our Affordable Homeownership Program

We don’t give away free homes; rather, our Affordable Homeownership Program bridges a gap for families unable to afford a traditional mortgage by providing them with the opportunity to purchase their own home. Families who apply and are accepted to become Habitat Homeowners purchase their home through a no-down-payment, interest-free mortgage geared to their i

ncome and contribute at least 500 volunteer hours to Habitat. Once they move in, Habitat homeowners are responsible for maintaining their own home. We help families and individuals prepare for homeownership by providing homeowner education classes, ranging from financial literacy and budgeting to home-repair and maintenance. Our path to homeownership requires hard work, time, and dedication, but this helps ensure the long-term success of the families we partner with.

On Wednesday, we had the privilege to host a Take 5: Love Local event in partnership with the Chamber of Commerce. It was an exciting evening of networking and a strong opportunity for local business professionals to understand the ReStore and Habitat's affordable homeownership program.

Did you know that the entire ReStore movement started right here in Canada?

The very first Habitat ReStore was opened in Winnipeg, Manitoba, in 1991 by five dedicated volunteers who wanted a sustainable way to fund local build projects.

That single idea has grown into a global retail network with over 1,000 locations worldwide, including more than 100 across Canada.

Over 30 years later, that simple mission hasn’t changed: every donated item and every purchase helps fund safe, decent, and affordable housing in our communities.
