Sault Ste. Marie Indigenous Friendship Centre Friendship Centres are not-for-profit and charity corporations that are mandated to serve the needs of our community members.

All programs for the Indigenous Friendship Centre are available to those who are Status, Non-Status, Métis, or Inuit. We will not turn away anyone from attending programming or receiving services. Some individual programs may have additional referral requirements such as N’Mminoeyaa Health Clinic, Life Long Care, Employment Unit. Call the Program Coordinators for more specific program. Our Beliefs:

You’re Invited! - Community Engagement Night on Tuesday, October 13, 2026!

This evening will provide an opportunity for Indigenous community members and the wider Sault Ste. Marie community to connect with mayoral candidates, hear about their priorities and platforms, ask questions and discuss the issues that matter to our families and community.

Topics such as housing, community wellbeing, youth opportunities, emergency response and access to services are important to our community and we encourage everyone to come out, participate in the conversation and make their voices heard.

Time: 5:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m.

Delta Waterfront Hotel - Ballroom

Dinner/refreshments will be provided for all attendees!

STATEMENT FROM THE INDIGENOUS FRIENDSHIP CENTRE: October 7, 2026.

The Indigenous Friendship Centre in Sault Ste. Marie is sharing our formal response regarding recent comments made concerning the establishment of an advance polling location at our Centre.

Our Friendship Centre has proudly hosted advance polling for provincial and federal elections for more than a decade, providing an accessible and welcoming space where all eligible voters — Indigenous and non-Indigenous — can exercise their democratic right to vote.

Our Centre is non-partisan. Our role as an advance polling location is about accessibility, civic participation and community service, not supporting any candidate or political interest.

We believe conversations surrounding municipal elections and election administration are important. We also believe they must be grounded in respect, understanding and meaningful relationships with Indigenous communities and organizations.

As we continue our work through Reconciliation is Local, we are sharing our press release and a letter from our Executive Director, Cathy Syrette, to provide our community and the public with the Friendship Centre’s perspective on this matter.

We remain committed to welcoming everyone through our doors, supporting civic participation and working toward respectful relationships and meaningful reconciliation within our community.
