Friends of Canadian Libraries Friends of Canadian Libraries (FOCAL) was officially formed in 1998 as a national association for Friends of Library groups.

OUR GOALS
Communications: Using a variety of communication methods (print, voice and electronic) maximize the networking and information sharing potential of the FOCAL membership. Partnership: Create a schedule of regional meetings and workshops to bring Friends groups together. Leadership: Increase the awareness of the role of Friends of Libraries, and the existence of FOCAL as a national volunteer organization, active and effective in delivering resources and support to Friends of libraries.

Plus de 17 000 personnes ont demandé au gouvernement de maintenir une enveloppe budgétaire réservée à l’achat de livres dans les écoles.

Malgré l’annonce de 24,1 millions de dollars sur trois ans pour renouveler les bibliothèques scolaires, rien ne garantit que les sommes prévues pour les deux dernières années serviront réellement à l’achat de livres.

Comme le rappelle Laurence Monet, présidente de l’ALQ : « Le livre ne doit jamais être en compétition avec d’autres secteurs, comme le sport ou les activités sociales. »

Les conséquences sont déjà visibles : l’an dernier, environ 250 000 livres de moins se sont rendus dans les écoles québécoises. Pour les librairies indépendantes, les ventes aux écoles et aux bibliothèques représentent aussi une part essentielle de leurs revenus.
