Happy Pride Season! 🌈

This month marks the beginning of Pride Season, which goes from June through September. We recognize and celebrate the strength, resilience, and contributions of 2SLGBTQIA+ people in Sault Ste. Marie, Prince Township, and beyond.

The Sault Ste. Marie Police Service remains committed to building trust through respect, education, and ongoing dialogue. We are grateful for the work of Sault Pride and other community partners who continue to help make our community safer, more inclusive, and more welcoming for everyone.

June is National Indigenous History Month in Canada—a time to honour the histories, experiences, and contributions of First Nations, Inuit, and Métis Peoples, and to reflect on the ongoing impacts of colonization and our shared role in reconciliation.

Here in Bawating (The City of Sault Ste. Marie), we also recognize the deep history and leadership of the Crane People—Jiichaak Dodem—including Chief Shingwauk, who was of the Crane Clan.

Darrell Boissoneau, Knowledge Keeper/Teacher at the Anishinabek Police Service, recommends these resources for those looking to read, learn, and reflect:

• Seven Fallen Feathers by Tanya Talaga
• The Knowing by Tanya Talaga
• Upholding Sacred Obligations: The Final Report on Missing Children and Unmarked Graves by Kimberly Murray, Independent Special Interlocutor
• The Mishomis Book by Dr. Eddie Benton-Banai
• 94 Calls to Action from the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada
• Di-Bayn-Di-Zi-Win – To Own Ourselves by Jerry Fontaine and Don McCaskill

The Sault Ste. Marie Police Service deeply values our partnerships with Indigenous communities and remains committed to listening, learning, and working together in and around Bawating.

The Sault Ste. Marie Police Service has updated its online reporting platform, making it easier for community members to report certain non-emergency incidents to police.

First launched in 2020, the SSMPS’s online reporting platform now has a modern look and two new report types: Fraud / Scams and Traffic / Unsafe Driving Concerns. Additionally, community members can now upload video evidence directly through the platform when submitting a report.

The Ministry of Natural Resources has set humane bear traps on public property in The City of Sault Ste. Marie. The traps have been set due to public safety concerns related to bears being in close proximity to people during daylight hours.

These traps are being used to safely relocate bears that may pose a risk to people and to support the animals’ welfare.

Please do not approach, touch, or interfere with any traps. Tampering with traps can create safety risks for the public, responding officers, and the animals involved.

If you see a bear, keep your distance and call the Ministry of Natural Resources Bear Wise reporting line at 1-866-514-2327. In an emergency, call 911.

Our Elementary School Liaison Officer, Cst. Mark Prophet, recently visited a Grade 1 class to talk about the importance of using kind words, being a good friend, and keeping our hands to ourselves.

These conversations help students build positive relationships and learn simple ways to make their classrooms and schools safer, kinder places for everyone.
