Social Enterprise & Entrepreneurship - SEE Supporting and developing resources for Social Enterprises in Northern Ontario - Soutenir et développ

SEE is a Social Enterprise & Entrepreneurship Northern Region Partnership that assists Northern Ontario communities in developing and connecting the networks and tools they need to both make a living and address social, economic and environmental issues in their community, through social innovation and social enterprise. Social Enterprises engage citizens and spark change through developing innova

tive ideas and employment opportunities while meeting communities’ social, cultural and environmental needs. Social enterprises differ from other small businesses in that they use the “triple bottom line” (People, Planet, Profit) to assess their success and their governance structure often reflects community and/or collective control, e.g., cooperatives, non-profits. This one year project is funded by the Ontario Ministry of Economic Development and Growth. SEE is one of four regional partnerships from across Ontario to receive funding.

The Women of Ontario Social Enterprise Network (WOSEN) is a province-wide collaborative composed of five social innovation and system change organizations led by Pillar Nonprofit Network in partnership with NORDIK Institute, Social Innovation Canada, and Social Venture Connexion with support from Lean4Flourishing. To date, the project has engaged more than 940 participants from over 140 different rural, urban and First Nation communities across Ontario, and has assisted in unlocking $8.8 million for women founders.

The Centring Equity report by Dr. Jude Ortiz, NORDIK Institute Research Coordinator, aims to advance equity, provide a critical reflection on WOSEN’s approach, and consider its impacts on participants and the entrepreneurial ecosystem. Conclusions include that the program provides an inclusive and empathetic space for meaningful participation, and that participants left energized, with increased motivation and ability to develop and launch their business ideas. This report is the second publication capturing the initiative’s collaborative learning and impact; read the first report describing The Story of WOSEN here, or visit https://wosen.pillarnonprofit.ca/ to learn more.
