Sunshine Coast Salmonid Enhancement Society

Sunshine Coast Salmonid Enhancement Society ABOUT OUR ORGANIZATION
These goals are achieved mainly through overseeing and funding the operations of the Chapman Creek Hatchery.

The Sunshine Coast Salmonid Enhancement Society is a charitable organization dedicated to sustaining and building salmon stocks in local waterways and facilitating public education regarding salmonid habitat and life cycles. The Sunshine Coast Salmonid Enhancement Society is a non-profit organisation dedicated to sustaining and building salmon and trout stocks in local waterways and facilitating p

ublic education regarding salmonid habitat and life cycles. We are fortunate to have the assistance of Howe Sound Pulp Mill as their colder water is instrumental in providing summer tank facilities for the coho. The hatchery could not operate on the scale that it does without the tremendous efforts of the community, the Chapman Creek Hatchery volunteers, and our two staff. We can always use another hand around the place be it working with the fish, the machinery, the office, the fund-raising or the grounds. Most of all, we could not sustain our production numbers without the on-going donations of time, gifts-in-kind, and cash from many sources such as our members, the general public, Sechelt & Gibsons town councils, Sechelt Community Forest, BC Gaming, and many, many local businesses. Please consider purchasing a membership, sending a donation or even volunteering your time to help maintain the Chinook, Coho, Pink and Chum salmon stocks on the Sunshine Coast.

The ~64,000 Chinook have been ponded into tank 19! These Chinook were produced from adults in the fall of 2025 from Chilliwack Hatchery and then moved here as eyed eggs.

They should stay with us until May/June 2026, then be released into Chapman Creek. Of these 64,000, between 64 and 3,200 will reach adulthood.

The pinks have been ponded!

There are approximately 3,700 pinks that were fertilized on October 6th, 2025. They’ll be staying in tub 2 for about 10 days before being released.

Out of the all the little fry in the tub, only around 18-185 adults will come back home. 🏠 🐟

Fish Update!! Checking in on all our species for buttoning up. None are quite ready to be taken out of incubation, but the Pinks look like they'll be winning the race for first out!

03/17/2026

Feisty little coho feeding! There are about 22,000 coho in tank 31 here on site. These are the same coho that will be released during our upcoming 2026 release festival on May 16th 🐟

Incubation work is slowing down as we have finished picking and remeasuring the last group of coho. Most groups have hatched into alevin, and the chinook (first video) and pinks (second video) are nearly buttoning up! Soon, it'll be time to pond these little ones.

We at the Sunshine Coast Salmonid Enhancement Society had the amazing opportunity to tour the Powell River Salmon Society's facilities. Our President, Treasurer, Director, and Fish Tech took the trip to learn more about PRSS's processes and operations, as they are a much bigger facility than Chapman Creek Hatchery. We sincerely thank Shane and the PRSS for this opportunity to learn and connect!
