Royal Canadian Marine Search and Rescue Station 12 • Halfmoon Bay has two vessels based in Sechelt and Secret Cove BC with an area of responsibility starting at White Islets, north to McNaughton Point and half way across the Salish Sea. We also cover the Sechelt Inlet from Egmont to Sechelt and have been tasked for duty in areas further afield when needed. The Ken Moore is Station 12’s Zodiac 753

Hurricane, built in Delta B.C. This vessel is powered by 2 Yamaha 4 stroke 175 hp engines, seats 5 crew and is located in Secret Cove poised to service the Salish Sea and Malaspina Straight. The Lewis McPhee is a Zodiac 733 powered by 2 Yamaha 4 stroke 150 engines. It seats 3 and is located in Porpoise Bay ready to service the Sechelt, Salmon and Narrows Inlets. This vessel is named after longtime members, Don Lewis and Walter McPhee. Our station is run solely on the work of dedicated volunteers both on and off the water. We currently have 15 active crew members which includes 5 coxswains. We have another 4 members who are supporting members, either sitting on the Sunshine Coast Marine Rescue Society or helping out in station operations and fundraising roles. The Sunshine Coast Marine Rescue Society is the backbone of the organization, supporting funding through grant writing and fundraising. We are a non profit organization dedicated to saving lives on the water. Station 12 is grateful to receive financial support from:

Our crew put in some hands-on training with a towing exercise, working through the skills and communication needed to safely assist a vessel in trouble.

From approaching the casualty vessel to setting up the tow and managing the vessel underway, these training runs help keep our crew sharp and ready for the real thing.

You never know when the call will come - but we can make sure we’re ready when it does.

New build, same important mission. 🛟

We’ve just added a new Kids Don’t Float lifejacket loaner board to the community - this board is located at Coopers Green Park in Halfmoon Bay - in collaboration with the Sunshine Coast Regional District.

Kids Don’t Float boards provide free lifejackets for infants, children, youth and adults to borrow when they’re heading out on the water. Because the right-sized lifejacket can make all the difference.

A huge thank you to everyone who helps make these boards possible and keeps our local kids safer around the water. 💙

This is our third KDF Board along the Central Sunshine Coast, with our other two being located at the Porpoise Bay Boat Launch in Sechelt and at Secret Cove Marina.

SIMULATION!! (Content Warning ⚠️ Some realistic looking injury photos that may be triggering to some viewers ⚠️)

What happens when a routine marine SAR call suddenly becomes a mass casualty incident?

A recent simulated mass causality training scenario put our crew on a beach following a vessel fire and fuel-vapour explosion with 11 people ashore, all with different injuries and needs.

With only three SAR members arriving first, the team had to quickly establish command, assess the scene, triage casualties, manage bystanders, identify hazards and prioritize who needed help first.

And just like a real call, the situation didn’t stay static. Smoke shifted, the fire continued offshore, the tide came in, patients deteriorated and new information kept coming.

The goal wasn’t just to treat patients - it was to think, communicate, lead and work as a team when everything is happening at once.

A good SAR night isn’t always about dramatic rescues or rough seas. Sometimes it’s smooth coordination, solid training, calm communication, and a crew that works together without missing a beat. It’s radios crackling, navigation lights reflecting off the water and everyone quietly doing their part.

It’s trusting the people beside you, learning something new every time you head out, and coming back to the dock tired, salty, and proud of the work put in. Those are the nights that build strong crews and stronger friendships. ⚓️
