A Rotary Year Worth Celebrating

This is a moment to honour Terry Miller and his year as President of the Rotary Club of the Sunshine Coast Sechelt, and to say thank you for a year of leadership, service and genuine commitment to the place we all call home.

Terry's year as president tells a bigger story about Rotary. We love Sechelt and we care deeply about the people who live here. Rotary is about neighbours helping neighbours, strengthening our community and finding practical ways to make life a little better for others.

And under Terry's leadership, there was plenty of that.

There were 47 club meetings, 22 guest speakers and eight new or returning members welcomed into the Rotary family. But the real story isn't found in the numbers. It's found in what happened when people came together.

Throughout Terry's year, Rotary seemed to be everywhere.

Members visited seniors at Silverstone Lodge, toured our local museum and the new Palliative Care facility, travelled to Egmont and worked alongside neighbouring Rotary Clubs. There was a Christmas dinner, a Chinese soirée, a bocce tournament and plenty of laughter along the way.

But behind all that fun was some very serious community work.

Rotarians provided Christmas food for 50 local families, supported residents of the Women's Shelter, fed the Cops for Cancer entourage and purchased five Buddy Benches for local schools. Members spent six days over Christmas feeding and entertaining seniors and took over Sechelt's three Salvation Army kettles for a day, raising more than $2,200.

Our young people were also an important part of Terry's year. Four attended RYLA, another attended AIC, $4,000 in scholarships was awarded, and our relationship with the local Interact Club continued to grow.

Our community may be at the heart of what we do, but Rotary's reach goes much further. Projects in Kenya, Belize, Ukraine and Mexico received support, while our members continued contributing to The Rotary Foundation and its work around the world.

None of this happens because of one person. Terry would be the first to say that. It takes Rotarians willing to volunteer, organize, fundraise, cook, sell tickets, ring bells and simply show up when someone needs a hand.

But every good team needs someone helping to set the course.

Terry Miller did that.

Terry, thank you for your leadership, your energy and the countless hours you gave to Rotary. Thank you for reminding us through your actions what Rotary is really about: service, friendship and love for our community.

You leave behind more than a successful year as president. You leave our Rotary Club, and the community we care so much about, a little better than you found it.

And perhaps Terry's year might inspire someone else to get involved.

Come visit our Rotary Club. Meet some neighbours, make some friends and help make a difference in Sechelt.

We meet every Wednesday at 12:00 noon at the Sechelt Seniors Activity Centre.

There's always room at the table for someone who cares about our community.
