Congratulations to Firefighters Justin and Ethan on receiving Life Saving Certificates from ALTA Paramedic Health (Formerly Alberta Health Services EMS)in recognition of their actions during a medical emergency at the fire station in April 2025.

The Sexsmith Fire Department was also honoured to receive a Life Saving Certificate recognizing the teamwork, training, and commitment demonstrated by our members.

We are incredibly proud of Justin, Ethan, and all personnel who responded that day. This recognition highlights the importance of training, preparedness, and working together when seconds matter most.

Successful CPR starts with early recognition, a rapid response, and quick access to an AED. Justin and Ethan acted quickly and professionally when a firefighter from another station suffered a cardiac arrest.

Please join us in congratulating Justin, Ethan, and all members involved on this well-deserved recognition.

We are proud to recognize Firefighter Justin Reed for his exceptional actions during a medical emergency in April 2025.

While a firefighters from another department in the County of Grande Prairie was participating in a physical evaluation, they suffered a sudden cardiac arrest. At the time, Lieutenant Reed was overseeing the evaluation. Without hesitation, Justin immediately recognized the emergency and began life-saving measures.

He acted quickly, decisively, and in full accordance with his training, ensuring care was provided without delay until additional medical support arrived.

Thanks to Justin’s quick actions, including the early initiation of CPR and the use of an AED, the firefighter was given the best possible outcome in a life-threatening situation and is still with us today.

Justin’s calm demeanor, strong situational awareness, and decisive actions reflect the highest standards of the fire service and a deep commitment to the safety and well-being of his fellow firefighters.

Lieutenant Reed’s response is a clear example of dedication, competence, and leadership under pressure.

In recognition of his life-saving efforts and extraordinary service, Justin was presented with the Chief’s Coin by Chief Grant.

We’re excited to share that the Sexsmith Fire Department has added a new ladder truck to our lineup.

This truck gives our crews the ability to reach higher, work safer, and handle a wider range of calls in the community. It’s a great step forward for our department and something our members have been looking forward to for a while.

Over the next little while, you’ll likely see it out around town as we get training in and put it through its paces.

This weekend, the Sexsmith Fire Department is hosting Wildland Urban Interface (WUI) training with firefighters from several surrounding departments.

Residents may notice an increased presence of fire apparatus and personnel in and around the area. This is planned training, and there is no cause for concern.

This type of training helps ensure crews are prepared to respond to wildfires that may impact homes and our community.

We appreciate your patience and support while crews are out training. If you’re driving in the area, please watch for emergency vehicles and personnel.

The Sexsmith Fire Department is reminding residents to please keep fire hydrants clear of snow. In an emergency, every second counts, and firefighters need quick access to hydrants to supply water to fire trucks. A hydrant buried in snow can slow down response times when it matters most.

We ask residents to shovel a clear path to hydrants near their property and remove snow around them so they are easy to see and access from the street.

Under the Town of Sexsmith bylaw:

8. Any Person Owning or Occupying a Property with a Fire Hydrant adjacent to such Property shall be responsible for clearing snow and cutting weeds or grass around the Fire Hydrant in a manner that allows the Fire Hydrant to be clearly visible and accessible from the point on the Street closest to the Fire Hydrant.

9. If a Fire Hydrant is equidistant from two Properties:
(a) the Owner or Occupant of the Property immediately to the north or west of the Fire Hydrant shall comply with the provisions of Section 9 in even numbered years; and
(b) the Owner or Occupant of the Property immediately to the south or east of the Fire Hydrant shall comply with the provisions of Section 9 in odd numbered years.

Clearing just a meter of space around a hydrant can make a big difference for firefighters responding to an emergency. Thank you for helping keep our community safe!
