🔥 THORNE FIRE DEPARTMENT NOTICE 🔥

Fire Ban Lifted

The Thorne Fire Department would like to advise residents and visitors that the current fire ban has been lifted.

Residents are reminded that MRC Pontiac By-law 271-2021 remains in effect. In accordance with By-law 271-2021 and current fire risk conditions, open burning is prohibited between April 1 and November 14.

This includes:
❌ Brush piles
❌ Yard waste burning
❌ Any uncontained outdoor fires

What IS permitted:
✔ Fires in approved outdoor appliances equipped with a protective spark screen (fire pits, chimineas, etc.)
✔ Fires must be used safely and never left unattended
✔ A water source or extinguishing equipment must be readily available

Although the fire ban has been lifted, fire conditions can change rapidly due to weather, wind, and dry vegetation. Please remain vigilant and pay close attention to fire danger signage, municipal notices, MRC Pontiac advisories, and SOPFEU updates.

Levée de l’interdiction de faire des feux

Le Service incendie de Thorne souhaite informer les résidents et visiteurs que l’interdiction de faire des feux est maintenant levée.

Les citoyens sont rappelés que le Règlement no 271-2021 de la MRC Pontiac demeure en vigueur. Conformément à ce règlement et aux conditions actuelles de risque d’incendie, les feux à ciel ouvert sont interdits du 1er avril au 14 novembre.

Cela comprend :
❌ Les tas de branches et de broussailles
❌ Le brûlage des résidus de jardin
❌ Tout feu extérieur non contenu

Ce qui est permis :
✔ Les feux dans des appareils approuvés munis d’un pare-étincelles ou d’un grillage protecteur (foyers extérieurs, chimineas, etc.)
✔ Les feux doivent être utilisés de façon sécuritaire et ne jamais être laissés sans surveillance
✔ Une source d’eau ou un moyen d’extinction doit être disponible à proximité

Même si l’interdiction de faire des feux est levée, les conditions peuvent changer rapidement selon la météo, le vent et l’état de la végétation. Veuillez demeurer vigilants et porter attention à la signalisation, aux avis municipaux, aux communications de la MRC Pontiac et aux mises à jour de la SOPFEU.

🚒 THORNE FIRE DEPARTMENT NOTICE 🚒

Fire Danger Signs & Total Fire Ban in Effect

The Thorne Fire Department would like to remind residents and visitors to pay close attention to the fire danger signs posted throughout our municipality and at lake associations, campgrounds, and public access points.

These signs are used to communicate the current wildfire danger level and any restrictions that may be in effect. When conditions become severe, additional notices such as “TOTAL FIRE BAN IN EFFECT” signs are posted to ensure everyone is aware of the restrictions.

🔥 Why Is There a Total Fire Ban?

Current weather conditions have created an extreme wildfire risk across our region. Recent periods of warm temperatures, low humidity, windy conditions, and limited rainfall have left forests, grasslands, and other vegetation extremely dry. These conditions allow fires to start easily and spread rapidly.

Even after receiving some rain, the overall wildfire danger can remain high. Light rainfall may not be sufficient to pe*****te deep into forest fuels, and dry vegetation can quickly return to dangerous levels when warm temperatures and low humidity persist.

🚫 What Does a Total Fire Ban Mean?

A Total Fire Ban means that all open-air burning is prohibited, including:

❌ Campfires
❌ Screened fire pits
❌ Outdoor fireplaces and chimineas
❌ Brush and yard waste burning
❌ Burning barrels
❌ Recreational fires
❌ Fireworks and sky lanterns
❌ Any outdoor fire that could produce sparks or embers

A screened fire pit is still considered an open-air fire and is prohibited during a Total Fire Ban. Screens help contain sparks but do not eliminate the risk of fire spread during extreme conditions.

Only approved cooking appliances designed for that purpose, such as propane or natural gas barbecues, may be permitted when used safely and in accordance with current regulations.

🌲 Help Protect Our Community

Wildfires threaten homes, cottages, businesses, forests, and emergency responders. Everyone has a role to play in preventing fires.

✅ Follow all fire restrictions and posted signage.
✅ Properly dispose of smoking materials.
✅ Avoid activities that create sparks near dry vegetation.
✅ Report any signs of smoke or fire immediately by calling 911.

EXTREME FIRE RISK & TOTAL FIRE BAN IN EFFECT

The Thorne Fire Department wishes to advise all residents and visitors that SOPFEU (Société de protection des forêts contre le feu) has declared an EXTREME FIRE RISK for our area and a TOTAL FIRE BAN is now in effect.

What is a Total Fire Ban?

A Total Fire Ban means that all open-air fires are prohibited, regardless of size or purpose. This includes:

❌ Campfires
❌ Backyard fire pits
❌ Brush and debris burning
❌ Burn barrels
❌ Fireworks and sky lanterns
❌ Any other open flame outdoors

Only cooking appliances designed for food preparation, such as propane or natural gas BBQs, may be used if operated safely and according to manufacturer instructions.

Why is this ban necessary?

Current conditions are extremely dry, and even a small spark can quickly develop into a fast-moving wildfire that threatens lives, property, and natural resources. High temperatures, low humidity, and dry vegetation significantly increase the risk of fire spread.

How You Can Help

✅ Respect the fire ban at all times.
✅ Properly dispose of ci******es and smoking materials.
✅ Avoid activities that may create sparks in dry grass or brush.
✅ Report any signs of smoke or wildfire immediately by calling 911.

⚠️ THORNE FIRE RESCUE – POWER OUTAGE SAFETY NOTICE ⚠️

A power outage is currently affecting parts of our area. Thorne Fire Rescue reminds all residents to take precautions to protect themselves, their families, and their property.

During a Power Outage:

🔦 Use flashlights instead of candles whenever possible. If candles must be used, never leave them unattended.

🚫 Never operate generators, barbecues, camp stoves, or fuel-burning heaters indoors. Carbon monoxide can build up quickly and become deadly.

🏠 Operate generators outdoors only and keep them well away from doors, windows, and air intakes.

🚨 Check your smoke and carbon monoxide alarms to ensure they are working properly and have fresh batteries.

⚡ Stay at least 10 metres (33 feet) away from downed power lines. Always assume fallen wires are energized and report them to Hydro-Québec.

📱 Conserve cell phone battery power and keep one device available for emergency communications.

🤝 Check on vulnerable neighbours, especially seniors and those who may require assistance.

Pendant une panne de courant :

🔦 Utilisez des lampes de poche plutôt que des chandelles lorsque possible. Si vous utilisez des chandelles, ne les laissez jamais sans surveillance.

🚫 N’utilisez jamais de génératrices, barbecues, réchauds de camping ou appareils à combustible à l’intérieur. Le monoxyde de carbone peut s’accumuler rapidement et être mortel.

🏠 Faites fonctionner les génératrices uniquement à l’extérieur, loin des portes, fenêtres et prises d’air.

🚨 Vérifiez vos avertisseurs de fumée et de monoxyde de carbone et assurez-vous qu’ils fonctionnent correctement.

⚡ Restez à au moins 10 mètres (33 pieds) des fils électriques tombés au sol. Considérez-les toujours comme sous tension et signalez-les à Hydro-Québec.

📱 Économisez la batterie de votre téléphone cellulaire et gardez un appareil disponible pour les communications d’urgence.

As we use more phones, laptops, tools, and rechargeable devices every day, the Thorne Fire Department would like to remind residents about the importance of charger and battery safety. Improper charging can lead to overheating, electrical fires, and serious damage.

Alors que nous utilisons de plus en plus de téléphones, d’ordinateurs portables, d’outils et d’appareils rechargeables, le Service d’incendie de Thorne souhaite rappeler aux résidents l’importance de la sécurité des chargeurs et des batteries. Une mauvaise utilisation peut provoquer une surchauffe, des incendies électriques et des dommages importants.

🔥 Safety Tips / Conseils de sécurité :

✅ Use approved and manufacturer-recommended chargers only
✅ Do not leave devices charging overnight or unattended
✅ Keep chargers and batteries away from beds, couches, and flammable materials
✅ Replace damaged cords, plugs, or swollen batteries immediately
✅ Avoid overloading power bars and outlets
✅ Unplug chargers when not in use
✅ Never charge batteries near exits or doorways
