Mulmur Monday!
Mulmur Corners, located at the crossroads of 7th Line and Highway 89, is the oldest settlement in Mulmur.
By 1860, with a population of 40, this historic settlement included 2 blacksmiths, a shoemaker, a harness maker, a hotel, a courthouse, a cabinet maker, a clothier, as well as an Anglican church and school. Across the road, in the Town of Mono, the 1890 two-storey school (USS #17) still stands today as a private residence.
In addition to being the oldest settlement in the Township, Mulmur Corners was also home to Mulmur’s first store, post office, and courthouse, which were located on the southwest corner of Lot 1, Concession 8. The original store, operated by Thomas Henerson, was later sold to the Murphy family, who opened Murphy’s General Store around 1874. The store remained in operation for about 40 years until the Murphy family eventually closed its doors around 1914.
St. Luke’s Anglican Church and Cemetery were built on land donated by one of Mulmur’s Founding Fathers, John Little, at 956046 7th Line EHS. The original log church, built in 1845, was replaced with a stone church in 1860 and in 1927, the church was demolished after a new brick church was built in the village of Rosemont.
The cemetery, believed to be the oldest in the Township, served as the burial place for all of Mulmur’s early settlers in the Rosemont district, regardless of their religious denomination.
Today, the cemetery remains, and the weathered stones of the church’s old foundation can still be seen, subtle traces of where our beautiful Township began.
