When wildfires happen, most buildings don't burn from direct flames. They ignite from embers.

That means the area right next to your house matters most. Here's where to start:
✅ Clear leaves, needles, and debris within 1–2 metres of your home
✅ Clean out your gutters. Dry debris is ready-made tinder for a single ember
✅ Move firewood at least 10 metres from your house
✅ Replace combustible mulch near your foundation with gravel or stone

These steps are mostly free and take an afternoon. Your home's best protection starts well before any fire breaks out.

🔥 Check before you burn! What does this mean for you?

Before lighting a campfire, brush pile, burn barrel, chiminea or wood-burning fire bowl, check the Nova Scotia BurnSafe map after 2:00 pm daily during wildfire risk season.

Use the colour guide:
🔴 Red: Burning is not allowed
🟡 Yellow: Burning is only allowed 7:00 pm – 8:00 am
🟢 Green: Burning is allowed 2:00 pm – 8:00 am

When conditions become very dangerous, a fire ban may be proclaimed for one or more counties, or across the province. When a fire ban is in place, the map stays red, meaning open fires are not allowed anywhere provincial burn restrictions apply. Consumer fireworks are also not allowed during a fire ban.

📞 To report a wildfire or burn restriction violation, call 1-800-565-2224 or 911.
🏛️ Please also follow all applicable municipal bylaws and policies.

Let’s keep our homes, forests, neighbours and shorelines safe this summer. 🌲🌊

The Municipality of Shelburne recently visited the Structural Protection Unit (SPU) and fire training facility housed in the Municipality of Barrington to review the equipment and regional response capabilities now available within Shelburne County. 🚒

The SPU was acquired through the Regional Emergency Services Provider Fund (2025–26) and includes specialized sprinkler protection equipment designed to help protect structures during wildland-urban interface fires.

Our Administrator of Protective Services and REMO Coordinator appreciated the opportunity to tour the unit alongside Barrington’s Fire Service Coordinator, discuss regional collaboration, and continue building strong partnerships focused on public safety and emergency preparedness.

This initiative reflects the strength of municipalities, fire departments, emergency management organizations, and community partners working together across Shelburne County with a shared commitment to protecting residents, homes, and communities.

By investing in regional cooperation, shared training, and emergency response resources, we are helping ensure our communities are better prepared, better connected, and better supported when emergencies arise.
