IAFF Local 2461. Strathcona County Firefighters/ Paramedics. Proudly serving Strathcona County, AB The local originally consisted of 16 members.

Strathcona County Fire Fighters Union Local 2461 is a member of the International Association of Fire Fighters, representing 180 members of Strathcona County Emergency Services. Strathcona County Fire Fighters became affiliated with the International Association of Fire Fighters on September 16, 1975. Our members work out of 4 stations providing advanced life support ambulances (contracted to Alberta Health), fire suppression and rescue services.

BACK TO SCHOOL IS HERE!

The school bells are ringing, backpacks are packed, and our roads are getting busy again!

As firefighters and paramedics, we see firsthand how quickly things can change on the road. Slow down, stay alert, and watch for children, school buses, and crossing guards.

Stop for flashing school bus lights.
Give pedestrians the right of way.
Put the phone down and focus on driving.
Leave a little earlier and slow down in school zones.

To all the students, teachers, staff, and parents heading back today, have a safe and successful school year!

Lithium ion batteries are becoming a bigger part of everyday life, from e bikes and scooters to electric vehicles and energy storage systems. With that comes a growing fire and safety challenge for firefighters, first responders, and the public.

Lithium ion battery fires can burn at extreme temperatures, produce toxic gases, and can reignite long after they appear to be extinguished.

That is why we are supporting Petition e 7656, calling on the Government of Canada to establish a National Lithium Ion Battery Fire Safety Initiative.

The petition calls for better national reporting and research, stronger safety standards, improved firefighter training, and investment in equipment and suppression technologies.

This is about being prepared for an evolving hazard and making sure firefighters and the public have the tools, information, and protections needed to stay safe.

We encourage Canadians to learn more and consider signing the petition.

Welcome to Local 2461

Today, we recognize the Station 2 firefighters who have joined Local 2461 as paid on call members.

These members have full time careers and commitments of their own, yet they continue to choose to serve Strathcona County and the communities they call home.

Their commitment deserves to be recognized. Being a firefighter is more than a job. It is a commitment to your community, your crew and the people who may need you on their worst day.

We are proud to have you as part of Local 2461 and look forward to creating more opportunities for our paid on call members to connect, contribute and show the communities they serve just how much they give back.

Four Platoons. One Championship. One Trophy.

Congratulations to the 2026 Local 2461 Platoon Softball Champions the Bio Steelers!

A great day of competition, teamwork, and plenty of bragging rights. Thanks to everyone who came out, played, cheered, and helped make this year’s tournament a success.

Until next year… the trophy belongs to the Bio Steelers.

South Cooking Lake Trail Days is back!

Come out and enjoy a great day in the community with something for the whole family. Start your morning with the pancake breakfast at 8:00 AM, then catch the community parade at 11:00 AM.

Stick around for the car show, country market, wagon rides, petting zoo, bouncy houses, kids’ games and plenty of family fun throughout the day until 4:00 PM.

We’ll see you out there!

Rescue Complete

Not every call requires lights and sirens.

Mom stopped by Station 1 to let us know her son’s kite had become tangled high up on the goal posts. We grabbed a few firefighters and headed over to help.

The hook wasn’t quite doing the job. As we were getting ready to grab a roof ladder, Levi decided he had a different plan and climbed up to carefully unwrap the kite.

A few minutes later, the kite was back on the ground and one very happy kid was back in business.

What an incredible day!

A huge thank you to everyone who joined us for our Fire Truck Spray Park Day. It was great to see so many families out enjoying the sunshine, cooling off, and spending time with our firefighters.

Events like these are a great opportunity to connect with our community, build relationships, and create lasting memories. We hope everyone had as much fun as we did!

We can’t wait to see you at the next community event!
