Strathcona County Fire Fighter/Paramedics IAFF Local 2461. Strathcona County Firefighters/ Paramedics. Proudly serving Strathcona County, AB The local originally consisted of 16 members.

Strathcona County Fire Fighters Union Local 2461 is a member of the International Association of Fire Fighters, representing 180 members of Strathcona County Emergency Services. Strathcona County Fire Fighters became affiliated with the International Association of Fire Fighters on September 16, 1975. Our members work out of 4 stations providing advanced life support ambulances (contracted to Alberta Health), fire suppression and rescue services.

Vehicle Fire

On October 8, firefighters responded to a vehicle fire at Sherwood Park Mall.

To fully extinguish the fire, crews needed to open the hood to access the engine compartment and apply water directly to the source of the fire. In vehicle fires, heat can melt the hood release cable, preventing the hood from opening normally and making access more challenging.

Fortunately, the vehicle was parked away from other cars, helping prevent the fire from spreading to nearby vehicles and limiting further damage.

This incident is a reminder of how quickly a vehicle fire can develop and why keeping a safe distance from burning vehicles is important.

Kimball represents a powerful reminder of why this cause matters so deeply to our firefighting family. Research has shown a link between firefighting and an increased risk of ALS, making this an issue that hits close to home for all of us.

We encourage everyone to get involved, help raise funds, and support continued research in the fight against ALS. Together, we can make a difference for Kimball and everyone affected by this devastating disease.

🥌 Proud to partner with the Alberta Firefighters Curling Association and the Sherwood Park Curling Club! 🔥

The Strathcona Fire Charitable Society is excited to announce we'll be represented on the ice all through the 2026/27 season, leading up to the 2027 Alberta Firefighters Curling Bonspiel, February 3 to 7, 2027.

Curling is all about teamwork, good sportsmanship, and community, and so is the fire service. We're grateful to the Alberta Firefighters Curling Association and the Sherwood Park Curling Club for welcoming us in and helping us share our mission right here in Strathcona County.

Thanksgiving at the fire hall doesn’t always go as planned.

Sometimes the meal gets left behind and the crew heads out the door when the tones drop. Some plates are full, some haven’t been touched, and the meal can wait.

We’re proud to be there when our community needs us, no matter the day.

True North Rescue Challenge

LOCAL 2461 FIREFIGHTERS TAKE ON THE TRUE NORTH RESCUE CHALLENGE

Over the past few weeks, a team of firefighters from IAFF Local 2461, Scona Seven, travelled to Penticton, BC, to compete in the 2026 True North Rescue Challenge.

The four day competition brought together highly skilled rescue teams to test their abilities across four challenging disciplines:

Wilderness Rescue
Industrial Rescue
Confined Space Rescue
Rope Access

Competitions like this push rescuers to their limits, requiring technical skill, communication, problem solving, leadership and, above all, teamwork.

We’re proud of Scona Seven for representing Strathcona County Emergency Services and Local 2461 on the international rescue stage and for putting their skills to the test alongside some of the best rescue teams in the world.

Congratulations to the entire team on an incredible experience and thank you for representing our members and our community.

World Teachers’ Day

Today, we want to take a moment to recognize the teachers and education support staff who make such a difference in our community.

As firefighters, we’ve had the opportunity to spend time in schools, classrooms, and with students. We’ve seen firsthand the amount of work that goes on behind the scenes. The extra hours spent planning lessons, supporting students, preparing classrooms, answering questions, and making sure every student has the opportunity to succeed.

We also want to recognize the teachers who have supported our firefighters and their families over the years. The patience, understanding, encouragement, and care you provide to our kids does not go unnoticed.

Teaching is so much more than what happens during school hours. It takes dedication, compassion, and countless hours that often happen behind the scenes.

From all of us at Strathcona Firefighters Local 2461, thank you for everything you do for our community and for our kids.

Today, on the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, we take time to listen, learn and remember.

We honour the children who never returned home, the Survivors of residential schools, their families and communities, and all those who continue to carry the impacts of that history.

As firefighters, we understand the importance of community, connection and looking after one another. Today is an opportunity to reflect on our shared history and our responsibility to build a future grounded in respect, understanding and reconciliation.

Platoon One, Training at the Vermilion Tower

Over the past week, Platoon One spent time at the Vermilion training tower putting their skills to work and continuing to hone the craft of firefighting.

Training in a controlled environment like this gives our members an opportunity to work through realistic scenarios, practise operating in low visibility conditions, and reinforce the fundamentals that matter when the conditions are anything but ideal.

From search and rescue to hose line operations, SCBA, communication and working as a team, these training days are about building confidence through repetition and keeping our skills sharp.

The fireground is not the place to learn for the first time. We train hard so that when the call comes, we're ready to do the job.
