Ok, hear me out…

BATS!

Here’s the good news… the bat population is making a come back 🦇

What does this mean for you? As they move from their summer to winter home, you may spot one.

If you see a bat:
🦇 Leave it alone — it will usually move on
🦇 If it’s inside, close off the area and open a door or window so it can go find its other bat friends
🦇Call us if you need help (with bats) 1-800-565-2224
🦇Tell us about it! Report sightings to the Atlantic Bat Conservation Hotline at 1-833-434-2287

But remember, if you or your pet touch or may have touched a bat, or woke up and found a bat friend hanging out, you will want to seek medical or veterinary advice right away.

Bats can carry rabies, and quick follow-up matters.

Never handle a bat, alive or dead, with bare hands.

🌲🎄 Celebrating a legacy rooted in Nova Scotia's forests.

This year, the Cumberland County Exhibition's Christmas Tree Competition is being held in memory of Keith Moore of ShelBell Farm. The competition honours Keith's passion for Christmas tree growing, his dedication to the forestry sector, and the lasting impact he had on families and communities in Cumberland County.

Christmas trees are an important part of Nova Scotia's forestry heritage, supporting rural communities, local businesses, and family traditions across the province. This competition brings growers together to showcase the quality, care, and pride that go into producing some of the finest Christmas trees in the world.

Please stay off the roads unless your trip is absolutely necessary.

Heavy rainfall has caused dozens of damaged roads in Cape Breton and Eastern Mainland Nova Scotia. Conditions can change quickly, and some roads may be unsafe or impassable.

If you don’t need to travel, stay home and wait for conditions to improve.

If you must travel:
• Call 511 to check on road conditions before leaving.
• Watch for closures and travel advisories.
• Never drive through flooded or damaged roadways.
• Turn around if you encounter unsafe conditions.

Your best route right now may be no route at all.

Stay safe and stay informed.

🚨 OHV riders: know before you go 🚨

Heading out on an off-highway vehicle (OHV)? Make sure you have the right permission before you ride.

Private land: Get written permission from the landowner first. Riding without it can mean fines of up to $985. Some OHV associations have agreements in place for their members, so check with your local club before you go.

Trails and protected public land: Some associations have agreements that allow OHV use in specific designated wilderness areas. Riders must be current members of the applicable association or have a valid trail pass. Without it, fines can reach up to $1,500.

✅ Stick to authorized trails

✅ Carry and display your membership or trail pass

✅ Respect landowners, trails and protected areas

Ride responsibly and help protect Nova Scotia’s natural spaces for everyone to enjoy.

A happy update from Eastern Passage!

When a contractor discovered osprey chicks nesting near oil tanks scheduled for removal, they paused work and reached out to DNR for support. While the young birds grew, a new nesting platform was installed nearby, and biologists have since observed the chicks using it to perch and rest.

A great example of people and wildlife working together.

⬆️Look up, Cape Breton! Low-flying aircraft may be spotted over the next four to five weeks✈️

This is part of the Provincial Geophysical Assessment and Data Acquisition Project. The project will help us better understand Nova Scotia’s geology (what’s under our feet!) while supporting responsible resource development through better planning, less environmental disturbance and high-quality public data for researchers, communities and industry.

This public information will not only help companies explore and invest responsibly — it will also give Nova Scotians a better picture of the land beneath us and how it shapes our province.

Once finished in Cape Breton, the survey will move to other areas of the province, outlined in red on the map.🌍

Ever wondered what Nova Scotia is made of?

From sparkling amethyst to ancient fossils, the Nova Scotia Gem & Mineral Show in Parrsboro is a celebration of the natural treasures beneath our feet.

If you're in the area, stop by to explore incredible displays, meet collectors and enthusiasts, and discover the geology that helps tell Nova Scotia's story.

The show is on today until Sunday, 10am - 5pm at the Lion’s Recreation Centre.
