Community Notice - New Speed Limit & Road Safety Reminder

As an update to our May 13th community notice, we want to provide some clarity regarding the community speed limit changes that were scheduled to be in effect starting June 1st, 2026.
Changes to how we keep Sipekne'katik safe are bound to experience some hiccups or delays but we can happily say new signage has arrived, and installation has begun. As this work is carried out we ask you to remember the following:

⬇️NEW SPEED LIMITS⬇️
Fisheries to just past the Bridge 70 KM/H
Residential Area (Rest of Community) 40 KM/H
School Zones 30 KM/H

Important Note: these new speed limits officially come into effect only when the physical road signs are posted.

Community Infrastructure & Enforcement: New speed bumps are planned to be installed at strategic locations throughout the community. These are designed to encourage consistent, safe speeds. Please be prepared for these changes to the roads and reduce your speed to avoid vehicle damage or sudden braking.

Further details regarding community traffic enforcement, ticketing, and safety regulations will be provided as our infrastructure updates continue.

Critical Road Safety Reminders: Passing a school bus while its red lights are flashing is illegal and extremely dangerous. You must stop when a bus has its red lights flashing and stop arm extended, regardless of which direction you are travelling. Expect frequent stops during morning and afternoon routes.

Speeding in the community or passing a stopped school bus can result in significant fines and points off your license.
These changes may impact your travel time, and we encourage everyone to leave a few minutes earlier to accommodate a slower, safer pace.

Road safety is a shared responsibility. By slowing down and respecting these new changes, you can help keep Indian Brook safe for everyone.
