We’re proud to share this video and, more importantly, to recognize an organization that is helping volunteer fire departments across Canada strengthen their ability to respond to wildland fires.

Shuniah Fire & Emergency Services extends our sincere thanks to GlobalMedic for their generous donation of a wildland fire skid system.

The unit provides us with a 1,000-litre water tank, high-pressure pump and hose system that can be mounted on a pickup or utility vehicle. For a department like ours, this is a valuable addition to our capabilities. Its size and maneuverability allow us to bring water and firefighting capability into areas where larger apparatus may have difficulty operating, particularly during wildland and interface incidents.

Living and responding in a community surrounded by forest, rural properties, waterways and areas of limited vehicle access, having the right equipment available can make a real difference. This donation strengthens our ability to get water, equipment and firefighters where they are needed.

We are grateful to GlobalMedic for recognizing the needs of volunteer fire departments and for investing directly in the people who protect their communities.

On behalf of the members of Shuniah Fire & Emergency Services and the community we serve, thank you to GlobalMedic for your generosity and for supporting volunteer firefighters across Canada.

We’re proud to put this equipment to work protecting Shuniah. 🚒

Following a recent fire safety campaign, Shuniah Fire & Emergency Services noted several Recreational Vehicles (RV’s) and trailers that had propane gas detectors but did not have a working smoke or carbon monoxide alarm installed.

A propane detector is NOT a smoke or carbon monoxide alarm.

Here's the difference:

🔥 Smoke Alarm – Warns you of fire.

☠️ Carbon Monoxide Alarm – Warns you of deadly carbon monoxide gas from fuel-burning appliances.

🔶 Propane Detector – Warns you of propane gas leaks only.

Each device protects you from a different hazard.

Take a few minutes today to:
✅ Check that your trailer has a working smoke alarm.
✅ Confirm you have a carbon monoxide alarm if your trailer contains fuel-burning appliances.
✅ Test all alarms monthly.
✅ Replace alarms that have reached their expiry date.

Early warning saves lives. If you're unsure whether your trailer has the proper protection, take a look today - it could make all the difference.

The wildland fire hazard is currently high to extreme across the Northwest fire Region today. As the drying trend continues, we advise the public to remain cautious. Holdover lightning from the past several days has potential for new fires to start across the Northwest Region.

We would like to remind the public that a Restricted Fire Zone remains in effect due to the current fire load, the increased fire hazard, and to reduce the number of human-caused fires. Learn more about restrictions at Ontario.ca/fireupdates

Yesterday we posted about the importance of checking the certifications of your smoke/CO alarms. Shortly after we had a resident arrive at the firehall to check the validity of these CO alarms that were purchased online! Not only are these on a Health Canada recall list BUT they do NOT have either the CSA or UL-C testing mark that certify that they are tested to Canadian Standards. We cannot stress enough the importance of ensuring they are CSA or UL-C approved to ensure they are able to do the job they were meant to do -saving lives!

With increasing fire activity across the province, it is always important to be prepared. Regardless of where you live, having a plan and kit will help you be prepared for any emergency.

Here are some things you can do to prepare:

Make sure you are aware of the current fire situation and know where to find wildland fire updates. Regularly check official information sources, including channels where your community posts local updates.

Prepare an emergency kit. Your kit should contain everything you may need for 72 hours, including important medications and documents, clean drinking water, non-perishable food, batteries, and anything else you might need for your family and pets.

Create an emergency plan and share it with your family.

Stay informed about weather forecasts and the fire hazard in your area.
