It is with great sadness that we share the passing of Cliff Doherty.

Cliff was instrumental in the creation of RCMSAR Station 106 Shuswap and in establishing marine search and rescue on Shuswap Lake. His vision, leadership, and dedication helped build the foundation of the station we know today.

Because of what Cliff helped create, countless people have been assisted on Shuswap and Mara Lakes, and lives have been saved.

His legacy will continue through every member who serves and every mission we respond to.
Cliff will be deeply missed.

Our sincere condolences to Jo-Ann and the Doherty family.

It’s almost Safe Boating Awareness Week, and with the sunshine finally returning to the Shuswap, our team has been hard at work preparing for another busy season on the water. ☀️🚤

Over the past few weeks, volunteers from RCMSAR Station 106 have been stocking our Kids Don’t Float kiosks and completing maintenance on our Life Ring Stations throughout the Shuswap.

Did you know we currently maintain:
• 20 Kids Don’t Float kiosks
• 19 Life Ring Stations
including a newly installed station at Sicamous Beach Park.

Life jackets from our Kids Don’t Float program are free to use. We simply ask that they are returned after use so they remain available to help keep everyone safe on the water.

A huge thank you to all of our volunteers who dedicate their time to installing, stocking, and maintaining these stations each year. Your hard work helps support RCMSAR’s mission of saving lives on the water.

Which one of our stations is NOT located along the coastline of BC?

Our Royal Canadian Marine Search and Rescue Station #106 - Shuswap station serves the inland waters of Shuswap and Mara Lakes—one of the busiest recreational waterways in the province.

Tamara has been a volunteer with the station since 2021 and currently serves as station leader, media liaison, and station operations assistant.

“I’ve been volunteering since I was 8 years old," said Tamara. "When I moved to Sicamous, I knew there would be an organization where I could give my time. Helping those who may be experiencing the worst day of their life—and knowing that someone is there to help—means everything.

Shuswap Lake, with its four arms, many water-access-only homes and cottages, and reputation as the houseboat capital of Canada, keeps crews busy year-round—especially through the summer months.

For husband and wife team Linda and Brian, joining Royal Canadian Marine Search and Rescue Station #106 - Shuswap started with a long-standing connection.

Before moving to the Shuswap, they already knew a member of the station—and when they arrived, Brian was quickly recruited, with Linda joining not long after.

Both bring backgrounds in emergency services, including law enforcement, with Linda also working as a paramedic. Linda initially joined as a supporting member, but it didn’t take long before she stepped into an operational role.

“I realized—I can do this. I can go on missions. Everybody’s been really welcoming. Everyone’s very patient and willing to teach—no problem.”

Together, Linda and Brian are part of the team helping keep people safe on the waters of Shuswap Lake.

⚠️Anybody missing a bouy? ⚠️

During one of our training sessions members of station 106 onboard Tolonen noticed this private marker floating in the middle of the lake just off marble point. Please reach out if this belongs to you.

Friendly reminder that spring runoff brings lots of extra debris to the middle of the lake, so be sure to keep an extra good lookout for logs, docks, and rouge bouys!
