Living Landscapes of SG̱ang Gwaay - Featured in the May/June 2026 issue of Archaeology Magazine, this story highlights ongoing work at SG̱ang Gwaay Llnagaay.

Following a powerful 2018 storm, restoration efforts at the site became an opportunity to care for both the cultural and natural landscape. This work is part of a Haida-led initiative, guided by the Haida Gwaii Museum, Haida staff, Haida Gwaii Watchmen and Haida cultural resource experts, in collaboration with Gwaii Haanas.

Grounded in the Haida principle “Gina ‘waadlux̱an gud ad kwaagid” — everything depends on everything else — the project integrates archaeology with conservation to ensure the village’s cultural integrity is upheld.

This opportunistic approach to archaeological has uncovered remarkable traces of daily life within the village, offering a deeper, more personal understanding of the people who lived, worked, and gathered here. Today, SG̱ang Gwaay remains a powerful place—where Haida heritage, knowledge, and stewardship continue to guide the future.

In mid-April, the Gwaii Haanas team went into the field to deploy Acoustic Recording Units (ARUs) in several locations for terrestrial songbird monitoring. Songbird surveys in Gwaii Haanas help our long-term ecological integrity monitoring efforts by analyzing current populations and population changes over time. Terrestrial birds are a valuable ecological indicator because they respond predictably to stressors. These include introduced species, and habitat alteration, loss, or fragmentation.

The use of ARUs helps our team expand the spatial and temporal scale of bird surveys. They are deployed in early spring each year and are programmed to record vocal activity rates during the the dawn chorus over peak breeding period, when birds are most vocal. After ARU retrieval, a subset of the gathered audio data is analyzed for songbird species abundance and diversity.

Overall, songbird monitoring will help answer questions about long-term population changes, assess the impacts of introduced fauna, and measure management effectiveness in future island restoration activities.

SHOCKING DISCOVERY IN GWAII HAANAS
During recent kelp restoration work and guuding.ngaay harvesting in the Murchison area, divers came across something unusual. A pineapple, an Easter Island statue, and large brown rock (notably featuring what appears to be a wind vane) were spotted amongst the rocky shores at the base of the kelp forests. Preliminary investigation by divers found these features were part of a micro-ecosystem, home to a dull sea star, a clarinet playing squid, and a yellow sea sponge that appeared to be wearing square pants. While these findings are being actively monitored, researched, and followed-up on, they speak to the vast biodiversity in Gwaii Haanas waters and the importance of kelp forests as marine habitats for a wide array of species. To learn more, head to the “APRIL FOOLS” section of our website.

In all seriousness, we want to take this moment to spotlight the ongoing efforts of the Chiix̱uu Tll iinasdll: Nurturing Seafood to Grow project. This work to restore kelp forests in Gwaii Haanas began in 2017. Gwaii Haanas teams, marine scientists, and commercial urchin harvesters have worked together with Haida Fisheries Program guardians to mitigate the effects of sea urchin barrens. This has helped kelp forests to return, providing important habitat for many marine species. Additionally, through this project, we have been able to provide Haida Gwaii communities with access to Guuding.ngaay, a traditional food.
