Are you aware that farm equipment can actually start wildfires? When operating any kind of machinery, including off-highway vehicles, it's crucial to take the following precautions.

✅ When operating equipment, clear debris from moving parts to reduce the risk of sparks or friction igniting a fire, and regularly check that your muffler is in good working order, as a malfunctioning muffler can emit sparks or excessive heat.

✅ Keep your equipment well maintained and avoid operating in areas with tall, dry grass, which can easily catch fire.

✅ Stay vigilant and aware of your surroundings at all times, watching for signs of smoke or other potential fire hazards.

✅ Always carry basic firefighting equipment on board, including a fire extinguisher, axe, shovel, and a container with at least five litres of water.

By following these guidelines, we can all help prevent wildfires and protect our environment. If you spot a wildfire, report it immediately by calling 310‑FIRE and provide clear details about the location and size of the fire.

Beavers are a native species in the Lesser Slave River region, but their activity can cause seasonal damage to municipal infrastructure such as roads and drainage systems. The MD mitigates this damage by trapping beavers and removing their dams.

In some cases, mechanical measures such as culvert guards can deter beaver activity. In other instances, removal is required and is performed by a licensed trapper in a safe and humane manner.

Peace Officers are issuing cleanup orders to individuals in violation of the MD’s Community Standards & Safety Bylaw 2023-03, focusing on properties deemed nuisances.

Residents must keep their properties free of litter—including waste not placed in authorized receptacles—and must not discard litter on private or public land within the MD.

✅ “Litter” includes solid waste, wood, metal, tires, glass, clothing, paper, food containers, grass clippings, and other materials, as well as junked vehicles, vehicle parts, household items, appliances, and animal waste.

✅ “Nuisance” refers to any property use or activity that is unsafe, potentially harmful to individuals or nearby properties, or that unreasonably interferes with the use and enjoyment of neighbouring properties. This includes deteriorated fence or wall displays, unsightly structures, excavations, or hazardous holes.

The MD urges residents to review Bylaw 2023-03 at mdlsr.ca/bylaws, which outlines definitions, nuisance and safety regulations, compliance requirements, inspections, enforcement, and penalties.

Fire permits are required for all outdoor burning activities in the MD, except campfires. Burning without a valid permit—or outside the conditions of that permit—can result in fines of up to $600.

The MD of Lesser Slave River and surrounding areas are currently experiencing a significant storm bringing heavy rainfall, hail, strong winds, and localized damage throughout the municipality.

Crews will not be out until Wednesday Morning, June 28. We ask for your patience as crews work through the municipality, as some areas may take longer to access depending on the extent of the damage.

Residents are encouraged to:

⚠️ Stay clear of downed trees, power lines, and other storm hazards.

⚠️ Report urgent roadway hazards or emergencies to the appropriate authorities.

Planning to light fireworks over the Civic Holiday long weekend?

If you’re in the Forest Protection Area, you must obtain written permission from a Forest Officer before using fireworks. Failing to secure permission can result in a $600 fine, and a site inspection is required as part of the approval process.

If a wildfire starts because of your fireworks, you may be held responsible for the full cost of firefighting. To keep things safe and straightforward, contact your local Forestry Office at least three days before the long weekend to arrange an inspection: Slave Lake at 780.849.7377 or Lac La Biche at 780.623.5388.

Residents are advised that a scheduled drone flight will take place in the Poplar Lane area today, Wednesday, July 22, between approximately 9am and 4pm, weather permitting.

An additional drone flight may be scheduled next week to complete the remaining areas of Poplar Lane.

Utilizing advanced technology, aerial imagery, and specialized software, drone mapping creates detailed, high-quality maps. This process provides valuable data, visualizations, and insights that help improve planning and decision-making for the MD.

Cow Parsnip typically grows approximately 3–7 feet tall and has smaller leaves, smaller flower clusters, and a ridged green stem covered with soft, fuzzy hairs. While Cow Parsnip can cause skin irritation and photosensitivity—particularly when sap comes into contact with skin and is exposed to sunlight—it is significantly different from Giant Hogweed.

Giant Hogweed is considerably larger, commonly reaching 10–14 feet in height, with leaves that can grow larger than a dinner plate. Its size and overall structure make it distinctly different from the Cow Parsnip commonly found throughout our area. Contact with Giant Hogweed sap can cause severe photosensitivity and serious burns, which may require medical treatment and can result in scarring.

Water Hemlock is another distinct species with a different leaf structure. Its leaves are pinnately compound, consisting of serrated leaflets, and it is less commonly encountered in our area. Water Hemlock is extremely toxic if ingested and is most often found in wet or marshy areas.
