Did you know? The name Sawridge is inspired by the land itself — an ancient glacial valley where the many hills were said to resemble the ridges of a saw.
Located at the east end of Lesser Slave Lake near the Town of Slave Lake, Sawridge First Nation has called this area home since time immemorial and is an original signatory to Treaty 8.
The Nation's story is one of deep connections to the land and water, generations of culture and knowledge, and a long history of leadership and economic development. Sawridge First Nation describes the land, waters and natural resources as sacred and essential, with a responsibility to preserve them for future generations.
Today, that connection between people, culture, land and water remains an important part of the story of the Lakes of the North.
As we explore our region, we also have an opportunity to learn more about the people who have cared for these lands and waters for generations — and the stories that continue to shape this place.

This Thanksgiving weekend, we're feeling especially grateful for the beautiful region we call home.

From peaceful lakes and colourful fall landscapes to welcoming communities and the people who make them special, there's so much to be thankful for across the Lakes of the North. 🍁

SCFN - Sucker Creek First Nation is hosting a 65 km ATV trail ride this Saturday, October 10th, in support of their Female Future Fundraising initiatives!

Get ready for a day of trail riding, friendly competition, prizes and community fun!

- Registration: 10 AM – Noon
- Sucker Creek First Nation
- Riders: $40 per hand
- Passengers: $30
- Cash only!

There will also be raffles, a 50/50 draw, toonie toss and concessions on-site!

We're kicking off a new series introducing you to the seven municipalities and Nations that make up the Lakes of the North region — and some of the places, people and experiences that make each one unique.
First up: the Municipal District of Opportunity No. 17.
Did you know? The MD covers more than 30,000 square kilometres — an enormous landscape of lakes, boreal forest and communities across northern Alberta.
From the shores of Calling Lake and Wabasca's lakes to a round of golf overlooking the water at Eagle Point, this part of the Lakes of the North offers plenty of reasons to slow down, explore and stay awhile.
It's also a region rich in Indigenous culture, traditions and community celebrations — an important part of the story of this place.
Over the next seven weeks, we'll introduce you to each of the partners that together make up one incredible region.
