✅ Do you enjoy working with people and being part of the action at the arena? The Town of Smithers Recreation Department is looking for enthusiastic, responsible individuals to join our team as Skate Patrol Attendants for the 2026-27 ice season.

🛼 Skate Patrol Attendants play an important role in creating a safe, welcoming, and enjoyable environment for skaters of all ages and abilities. Responsibilities include monitoring public skating sessions, assisting patrons, promoting safe skating practices, and helping with the overall operation of ice programs and special events.

⭐️ This is a great opportunity for individuals who enjoy community recreation, working with the public, and being part of a dynamic team. Previous skating experience is an asset, but a positive attitude, strong customer service skills, and a commitment to safety are essential.

Come help make our ice season a success while supporting healthy, active recreation in our community!

Did you miss Tuesday's Regular Meeting of Council? Don't worry, we’ve got you covered with a few highlights from the meeting:

☑️ Council approved the new Council Remuneration Policy (Cou-014), which outlines a one-time increase in Council remuneration to match similar municipalities.
☑️ Council voted to provide a letter of support to the Bulkley Valley Folk Music Society in their application to the Building Communities through Arts and Heritage Grant.
☑️ Council voted to provide a letter of support to Paul's Bakery for their application to the Rural and Remote Employment Initiatives Fund.
☑️ Council approved an amendment to increase the Development Services Contracted Services Budget by $47,000, to cover additional fees to complete the environmental consultant services at LB Warner Centre, as required in the Contaminated Soil Management Plan and Certificate of Compliance. This funding came from the reallocation of previously approved General Surplus funding from 2026 projects that came in under budget.
☑️ Council approved a grant application for $150,000 from the Union of British Columbia Municipalities Community Emergency Preparedness Fund to support Bulkley Emergency Support Services.
☑️ Council adopted Bylaw No. 2015 - Town of Smithers Zoning Bylaw No. 1987 Amendment No. 26-02

These women brought the heat! 🔥 Embers Rising: A Female Firefighting Experience was a fantastic day of learning, teamwork, and firefighting fun.

Of the 15 participants who signed up, four had no previous firefighting experience. It was a great opportunity to learn from one another, build skills and confidence, and make new friends.

Thank you to everyone who made the day possible:
🔥 the participants who bravely stepped outside their comfort zones,
💪 the five female mentors who shared their knowledge and guided newer members, and
💓 all the additional volunteers who helped the day run smoothly.

And a special thank you to the supporters of the event, including Smithers Fire Rescue, Telkwa Fire Rescue, Houston Fire Department, and Raven.

We’re grateful to everyone who showed up, shared their skills and helped create such a supportive environment.

Tonight, Tuesday, October 13, 2026, is the last scheduled regular meeting of Council for this term. The meeting will start at 6:30 p.m. in Town Hall (1027 Aldous Street).

Some agenda items for Council consideration include:
• Authorize the signing of Policy Cou-014 Council Remuneration , which outlines a one-time increase in Council Remuneration to 90% of the median remuneration of comparable municipalities.
• Request for a letter of support from the Bulkley Valley Folk Music Society for their application to the Building Communities Through Arts and Heritage Grant.
• Request for a letter of support for Paul's Bakery for their Rural and Remote Employment Initiatives Fund - Business Diversification and Sustainability Grant Application.
• Authorize a budget amendment to increase the Development Services Contracted Services 2026 Budget by $47,000, for additional fees required to complete the environmental consultant services at LB Warner Centre, as required in the Contaminated Soil Management Plan and Certificate of Compliance.

🎉 Smithers is privileged to have Jocelyn Foidart serving our community. Her work has helped foster collaboration among service providers and agencies across our town, creating stronger connections and more coordinated support for people who need it.

One example is the Situation Table, a project Jocelyn leads that brings organizations from across the community together each week to identify individuals who may be facing acute risk and connecting them with available services and supports.
