Don’t Forget - Provincial Home Owner Grant Program Applications🏠

The Home Owner Grant helps reduce the amount of property taxes eligible British Columbians pay on their principal residence.

➡️ Home Owner Grants can no longer be applied for through the Town of Smithers. Applications must be completed directly through the Province of British Columbia.

To apply or learn more visit: https://www2.gov.bc.ca/gov/content/taxes/property-taxes/annual-property-tax/home-owner-grant

The Home Owner Grant acts as a payment toward your property taxes. If the grant is not claimed before the due date, a 10% penalty will apply to any outstanding property tax balance.

Even if:
✔️ Your mortgage provider pays your property taxes, or
✔️ You defer your taxes

…you are still responsible for claiming your Home Owner Grant each year and notifying your mortgage provider of the grant amount you qualify for.

The Town of Smithers is seeking applications from two community members to serve on the Board of Variance ⚖

The Board of Variance is an independent body that considers appeals for minor variances to certain provisions of Town bylaws. Appeals are typically made by homeowners or developers when complying with a bylaw would cause undue hardship.

Board members review applications, hear from applicants, and make decisions based on the circumstances of each case and the authority granted under provincial legislation.

This is an opportunity to contribute to a fair and impartial process that supports property owners while maintaining the intent of Town bylaws. This is a low-commitment volunteer position, as the Board only meets when an application has been submitted for its consideration.

For more information and to apply, visit www.smithers.ca/news-notices/help-shape-your-community-join-committee

Application deadline: 1:00 p.m. on Tuesday, July 7, 2026.
