Flood Watch – Bulkley River and Tributaries
May 6, 2026 at 1400 hours

A Hazard Notice has been issued by Witset First Nation, Town of Smithers, Village of Telkwa, District of Houston, and the Regional District of Bulkley-Nechako (RDBN) effective May 6, 2026 at 1400 hours due to the Flood Watch on the Bulkley River and surrounding tributaries.

Residents are advised that due to the potential for flooding in low lying areas adjacent to the Bulkley River it is recommended that residents exercise extreme caution or limit recreation near and around the river at this time. Fast-moving water and unstable riverbanks increase the risk to public safety.
In the community of Witset it is strongly encouraged that people avoid the banks of the river and canyon.

Please contact the RDBN for more information or if you require support:

Please review the following notice from the BC Wildfire Service regarding a prescribed fire project planned on the Wetzin'kwa Community Forest Corporation tenure.

The BC Wildfire Service will be supporting the Wetzin’kwa Community Forest in partnership with the Office of the Wet'suwet'en conducting a cultural burn covering up to 14.2 hectares in the Northwest Fire Centre.

The exact timing of this burn will depend on weather and site conditions, but it could begin as early as Mon., May 3, 2026 to Sun., May 31, 2026. Smoke may be visible from Smithers, Telkwa and the surrounding communities, and to motorists travelling along Highway 16.

Burning will proceed if conditions are appropriate to ensure safety, meet objectives and allow for adequate smoke dispersal during burn operations, though smoke may also linger in the following days.

Proud of our committed group of Fire Fighters.

On National Volunteer Week no less, we want to highlight the incredible work of the Smithers Volunteer Fire Fighters Association.

After spending 11.5 hours attending the fire on Victoria Dr. yesterday, many of the volunteers headed out for another 2.5 hours of training to prepare for wildfire season.

We are incredibly fortunate to have such dedicated volunteers in our community that work tirelessly to keep us safe and prepared for emergencies.
