📢 Canada - U.S. Trade Update

The Smithers District Chamber of Commerce is closely monitoring the latest developments in Canada - U.S. trade relations.

Prime Minister Mark Carney has announced the suspension of trade negotiations following last-minute changes to proposed U.S. terms. The United States has imposed a 50% tariff on approximately $28 billion in Canadian goods, with Canada preparing matching counter-tariffs and additional measures to support affected workers and businesses.

For businesses in Smithers, Northern B.C., and across Canada, prolonged trade uncertainty can increase costs, disrupt supply chains, delay investment, and place further pressure on small and medium-sized enterprises. These impacts may extend well beyond exporters to businesses purchasing equipment, materials, technology, and other products connected to cross-border trade.

The Chamber network supports continued efforts to secure a fair, stable, and reliable trading relationship that protects Canadian businesses, workers, and key industries. At the same time, these developments reinforce the importance of strengthening domestic supply chains, reducing interprovincial trade barriers, diversifying export markets, and supporting Canadian and local businesses.

We will continue working through the Chamber network to share information, communicate business impacts, and advocate for practical support as further details become available.

BC’s visitor economy is built by thousands of people who open the doors early, stay late and know that the smallest details often create the best experiences.

The tourism sector includes more than 17,000 businesses, and 92 per cent of them are small enterprises. Nearly 40 per cent are located outside the Lower Mainland, making tourism an especially important economic driver for rural and northern communities.

These businesses do far more than serve visitors. They hire locally, support community events, purchase from nearby suppliers and give people another reason to live, work and invest in their hometowns.

British Columbia’s visitor economy works because of strong partnerships and people who care deeply about the places they represent.

TIABC is proud to be the voice of tourism and to stand up for the businesses that give BC its personality.

More than 17,000 businesses are helping make tourism BC’s Economic Superpower.

Share the love by tagging a tourism business that makes your community better.
