🌩️ **STORM PREPAREDNESS – BE READY BEFORE THE STORM ARRIVES** 🌩️

With storms in the area West Lincoln Fire Services is reminding residents to take a few minutes now to prepare for the possibility of power outages.

Severe weather can bring down trees and power lines, cause extended outages, and create additional challenges for rural residents. A little preparation now can make a big difference later.

**CHARGE UP:**
• Cell phones and tablets
• Portable battery packs/power banks
• Flashlights and rechargeable lanterns
• Battery-powered radios
• Any essential medical or communication devices

**IF YOU HAVE A SUMP PUMP:**
• Make sure your sump pump is working properly.
• If you have a **battery backup sump pump**, make sure the battery is fully charged and ready to go.
• Consider testing your backup system before the storm arrives.

**AROUND YOUR HOME:**
• Secure loose outdoor items that could become projectiles.
• Clear leaves and debris from storm drains and drainage areas.
• Have flashlights readily available — **avoid using candles whenever possible.**
• Keep your refrigerator and freezer closed during an outage to help preserve food.
• Know how to safely shut off utilities if necessary.
• If you rely on electrically powered medical equipment, make sure you have a backup plan.

⚡ **IF THE POWER GOES OUT:**
Stay away from downed power lines and assume they are energized. Never use a generator indoors, in a garage, or near windows or doors. Generators must be operated **outside and well away from the home** to prevent carbon monoxide from entering your home.

📱 **Take a few minutes now — charge it, test it, and prepare it.**

Being prepared before the storm means one less thing to worry about when the lights go out.

Annual hose testing is more than a requirement—it’s a commitment to firefighter safety and operational readiness. In accordance with NFPA standards, every length of hose is pressure tested and inspected to ensure it will perform when lives depend on it. A huge thank you to our dedicated firefighters for volunteering their time to complete our hose testing. Your commitment to maintaining our equipment helps ensure we’re always ready to serve our community safely and effectively. Great work, team!

❓ Did You Know | When an air quality advisory is in effect, open air burning is automatically prohibited in .

❗ This also means that open air burning is automatically allowed again (with a valid permit and according to guidelines) once the air quality advisory is lifted.

Fire Chief Hofsink is reminding the public that open air burning is always prohibited during air quality advisories.

This restriction is outlined within the Township’s Open Air Fire By-law and is in place to protect your health, your neighbours and our community. Any person found in contravention of the burn ban will be liable for all applicable fines, including cost recovery fees and charges for Fire Services.

The Township of West Lincoln and West Lincoln Fire & Emergency Services thank you for doing your part.

Every child experiences emergencies differently. For many autistic children, unfamiliar people, loud noises, flashing lights, and sudden changes can be overwhelming. A little extra patience, clear communication, and understanding can make all the difference.

Leanna Rea and Christina Rocca, from North City Insurance Brokers presented a donation of Sensory Kits to Deputy Chief Rakonjac and Fire Admin Sarah Trzok which will help our firefighters better support individuals with sensory sensitivities during emergency situations.

This initiative is made possible through North City Insurance Brokers, together with the Fire Marshal Public Fire Safety Council, which is distributing 200 sensory support kits to 65 fire departments across Ontario this year. As an added benefit, $5 from every kit distributed is donated to Autism Canada.
