We are proud to congratulate the dedicated firefighters from Smoky Lake, Vilna, and Waskatenau Fire Stations who successfully completed their NFPA 1001 Firefighter Level 1 exam and evaluation this year. This achievement represents countless hours of training, commitment, and teamwork, and it reflects a strong dedication to professional excellence and public safety.

Reaching NFPA 1001 certification strengthens our emergency response capabilities by ensuring firefighters are trained to nationally recognized standards. This directly benefits our communities through improved safety, faster and more effective emergency response, and increased confidence that our residents are protected by highly skilled professionals.

We would like to extend a sincere thank you to Enbridge Safe Community First Responder Program for their generous $10,000 contribution, which played an important role in supporting this training. Their investment helps build safer, more resilient communities and demonstrates a strong commitment to the people we serve.

At approximately 7:30am March 27, 2025 Smoky Lake Fire Rescue was dispatched to an outdoor fire on White Earth Street in Smoky Lake. Upon arrival Fire Crews found 2 bystanders pulling a burning flower pot away from the front entrence of the Drop-In Centre and using snow to extinguish the fire. Luckily the metal exterior of the structure protected the building from any damage. The probable cause of the fire is determined to be the flower pot being used as an ash tray. A reminder to everyone to extinguish and dispose of your smoking materials in proper receptacles. The majority of flower pots contain peat moss which is a combustible material.

Smoky Lake County has Implemented a Fire Restriction

Smoky Lake County has implemented a Fire Restriction effective 9:00 a.m. April 27, 2023. Smoky Lake County will not be issuing any new burn permits and all current fire permits will be suspended. With the dry conditions, cured dry grass becoming more prominent and lack of moisture the fire hazard is high at this time.

It is recommended that all burn permits that were issued be checked, to ensure that they are out and not cause a spring grass fire. Recovery of Firefighting Costs: In accordance with Bylaw: Fire Protection Services, as amended from time to time or any costs incurred by the County Fire departments will be charged to the landowner/permit holder, if the Fire Department or County is called upon to respond to extinguish a fire.

Fire pits, warming fires, barbeques and burn barrels will be allowed but must be supervised to ensure that they do not cause a secondary fire.

For further information please contact the Smoky Lake County, (780) 656-3730.
