Love boats, the ocean, or anything marine-related? 🚤⚓

If you’re in or around Victoria tomorrow, Coast Guard Day is worth checking out.

You’ll be able to tour Coast Guard vessels, meet crews and marine response partners, and spend some time on the waterfront with organizations that work on the water every day — including RCMSAR volunteers.

Our crews will be there talking about boating safety, what marine search and rescue calls really look like, and what it takes to volunteer with RCMSAR.

It’s a great free event for families, boaters, and anyone curious about the marine world around us.

We’re not saying our volunteers are being replaced… but if an otter submits an application with this kind of experience, we'll probably want to interview them. 🦦🚤

Meet Splash — the world’s first trained underwater search and recovery otter. Working alongside a dive search team in Florida, Splash helps locate drowning victims, missing persons, and underwater evidence.

Honestly, we’re impressed. Would fish treats count as operational expenses?

Check out the video below — this is both fascinating and unbelievably adorable.

A glimpse into the many sides of volunteer life at RCMSAR.
Training together. Supporting their community. Supporting each other. And more training. And occasional snow.

Behind every successful rescue is countless hours of training, teamwork, and preparation. 🚤
While the classroom may not be as dramatic as the water, this is where the knowledge and decision-making skills that save lives begin.

For anyone in the Greater Victoria area 👇

Coast Guard Day is a fun, free, family-friendly event. As a Coast Guard partner, RCMSAR volunteers will be there, alongside other marine-related organizations.

Come by and talk to our volunteers, learn what it takes to become an RCMSAR volunteer, and find out what you can do on the water to stay safe—and hopefully avoid a visit from us 😊

Safe Boating Awareness Week message #5: Be Prepared: You and Your Vessel ⚓🧭

A successful day on the water starts long before you leave the dock.

Before heading out, make sure both you and your vessel are prepared for the trip ahead. That means checking the weather, knowing the local conditions, carrying the right safety equipment, ensuring you have enough fuel, and sharing your trip plan with someone you trust.

It also means being realistic about your experience level and making sure your boat — and your passengers — are suited for the conditions and activities you’ve planned.

RCMSAR volunteer crews respond to situations that began with small issues: changing weather, mechanical problems, navigation mistakes, or boaters who simply weren’t prepared for the conditions they encountered.

Preparation can prevent small problems from becoming emergencies.

Every safe trip helps reduce pressure on volunteer rescue resources and helps ensure crews remain available for those facing true emergencies on the water.

A few extra minutes of planning before departure can make all the difference later.
