As many of you are aware, members of the White Lake, Tappen Sunnybrae, and Eagle Bay Fire Departments were called out yesterday afternoon to action an old smoldering slash burn.
You may see an increase in smoke activity this morning from this same slash pile (up from Salo rd.), this is due to the logging company using heavy machinery to ensure this is finally put out properly.
We would like to take this opportunity to remind our community members that category 2 and 3 open fires will be prohibited as of noon today.

It’s come to our attention that we have some local grads! Did you know that the White Lake Fire Department offers a $500 scholarship/bursary to grads in our area? If no local graduate applies, it is open to any grad from SASS.
If you have a graduate interested in this scholarship please reach out to the counselling department at SASS as soon as possible.

PSA - This evening we will be doing our Superior Water Shuttle Accreditation. As many of you know from past years, this is a multiple department affair and is extremely time sensitive. If we pass this accreditation, it benefits our community by lowering our house insurance costs. Tuesday night from 7:00 - 9:30 we will have 4 tenders (water haulers) on a set route from our hall to Carlin school. The tenders will be running their lights but NO sirens. Thank you for your patience 🙏🏻

With Spring cleaning in full swing for many of us at this time of year, here are some safe burning tips from BC Wildfire Service to keep in mind.

If you are planning a spring campfire or to burn debris around your property, follow these tips for safer burning:

✅Check conditions – Make sure burning is allowed in your area. Don’t burn if it’s windy.

✅Burn wisely – Campfires: no bigger than 0.5 metres by 0.5 metres. Category 2 fires: no bigger than 2 metres high and 3 metres wide; or stubble and grass up to 2,000 square metres. Clear the area around your fire down to bare soil.

✅Watch it – Never leave a fire unattended. Have an adequate water supply or a firefighting hand tool, like a shovel, within reach.

✅Put it out - Cold to the touch, not just out of sight, before you leave.

Your fire. Your responsibility.

A woman was rescued from her burning residence at approximately 10 AM, Friday, March 27 by fire crews from the Tappen Sunnybrae Fire Department, who were responding to reports of a fire inside a home on Mikkelson Frontage Road in Tappen.

The Tappen Sunnybrae Fire Department, supported by the Shuswap and White Lake Departments, arrived to find the home filled with smoke. They were informed a woman was trapped inside the burning building.

Fire crews entered the home and were able to quickly control the blaze, which was confined to one room in the house. They found the woman and were able to pull her from the residence.

First aid was administered by firefighters and members of the South Shuswap First Responders before her care was turned over the BC Ambulance Paramedics. The patient was then transported by helicopter to hospital for treatment of smoke inhalation.

Her condition is currently not known.

“We’d like to alert residents to the importance of having working smoke alarms in each bedroom and every floor of your home. Also, remember to conduct regular, monthly tests of these devices to make sure they are working properly,” said Len Youden, Columbia Shuswap Regional District Deputy Regional Fire Chief.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
