FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
On May 27, 2026, at approximately 1:52 p.m., Augusta Fire Rescue was dispatched to a marsh fire on County Road 18, south of Hall Road. Due to a First Response Agreement, the Edwardsburgh Cardinal Fire Department also responded to the incident.

Approximately 30 firefighters operating 12 emergency vehicles attended the scene. The fire consumed approximately 20 acres of marshland and was located dangerously close to a heavily forested area.

Firefighters worked under extremely difficult conditions, including intense heat, heavy smoke, and water depths of up to three feet, to successfully contain the fire within the marsh and prevent it from spreading into the adjacent forested area.

Due to the challenging terrain and conditions, the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) deployed a drone equipped with thermal imaging technology to assist firefighters in locating hotspots and ensuring the fire was fully extinguished.

All fire apparatus and personnel cleared the scene at approximately 5:15 p.m.

Augusta Fire Rescue would like to thank the Edwardsburgh Cardinal Fire Department, Leeds and Grenville EMS, the Ontario Provincial Police, and Leeds Grenville Public Works for their assistance during this incident.

It appears that this fire was intentionally set . Anyone with information is asked to contact the Grenville County OPP at 1-888-310-1122. People who wish to remain anonymous can contact Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 (TIPS) or online at www.ontariocrimestoppers.ca

The Victoria Day long weekend is finally here, and we know many of you are excited to head back to your cottages, cabins, and RVs for the first time this year. While you’re opening up the windows and sweeping off the deck, please take a few minutes to prioritize your family's safety!

After sitting empty all winter, your alarms need a check-up.

1) Test them: Press the test button on all Smoke and Carbon Monoxide alarms. If you don't hear a loud, piercing sound, replace the batteries immediately.

2) Clean them: Gently dust or vacuum the alarms. Cobwebs and dust from the winter can interfere with the sensors.

3) Check the dates: Smoke alarms need replacing every 10 years, and CO alarms usually every 7 to 10 years. If they are out of date, swap out the entire unit.

RV Tip: Don't forget to check your propane leak detectors, too!

Spring cleaning often means clearing out winter brush, leaves, and branches. If you are planning to burn your yard waste this weekend, an Augusta burn permit is strictly required. * Ensure you have your valid permit before lighting any fires.

Always keep a hose, bucket of water, or shovel nearby.

Never leave a fire unattended, and ensure it is completely extinguished before you go inside for the night.

A few minutes of prevention today means you can relax safely all season long.
