Northern Health and First Nations Health updated the recent drug alert for the community of Prince George.

Originally, the substance was reported as a yellow-orange colour, sold as “down”. The alert has been updated to note that substances of all colours and textures are highly toxic, resulting in an increased number of overdoses.

This substance is highly toxic, causes heavy and prolonged sedation, and requires more naloxone to reverse. Overdoses happen when the substance is smoked and/or injected.

Nee Tahi Buhn is honoured to share the work of Carlee Erickson, who attended the BCACCS First Nation Leadership Forum as our youth representative.

As part of the forum, youth were asked to create an art piece reflecting what they heard and felt during the conference. Carlee created this painting and shared the following speech, which deeply moved many in attendance.

"My painting is about moving from colonial control to First Nations jurisdiction.

On one side, you see rigid, grey boxes. These represent how colonial frameworks have fractured our childcare systems by forcing them into separate “silos” and rigid funding structures. They view our children through the lens of social policy instead of family and community.

But as youth, we know our children are gifts from the Creator. They don’t belong in boxes.

That is why the rest of the painting is filled with flowing, vibrant colors and traditional pathways that break right out of those grey boxes. This represents our communities reclaiming our inherent right to look after our own children. It shows a return to our traditional, holistic, and intergenerational ways of care where language, culture, Elders, and youth are all woven together to surround the child.

What we want to take away from this conference is the freedom to completely break down those walls so our children can grow up rooted in exactly who they are."

Well done, Carlee. We’re proud to have you represent Nee Tahi Buhn and grateful to share this powerful moment with the community.
