Elk Valley RCMP conduct vehicle and boat checks near Koocanusa Lake

On July 31, 2026, Elk Valley RCMP frontline officers, BC Highway Patrol officers, and the BC Conservation Service worked together to conduct a large-scale check stop in Baynes Lake.

During the two-and-a-half-hour check stop over 400 vehicles were checked for driver’s licences, proof of insurance, as well as driver sobriety. Over 125 breath demands were issued resulting in two 24 hour driving prohibitions for impaired driving.

Numerous violation tickets were issued for no insurance, failure to produce insurance, and other infractions as well as 23 warnings issued for drivers failing to produce their driver’s licence. One driver was also ticketed by the BC Conservation Service for failing to stop at the mandatory boat check with the driver having been located during the check stop.

On August 7, 2026, Elk Valley RCMP conducted boat patrols on Koocanusa Lake. Although the smoky weather reduced boat traffic, over the course of the five-hour patrol 14 boats were checked for various safety regulations as well as checks conducted for having liquor on board the boats. Numerous written warnings were given for various infractions.

Elk Valley RCMP wish to express our gratitude to our partner agencies in assisting with the check stops and for their help in keeping our communities safe.

Elk Valley RCMP, Police Dog Services, and Fernie Search and Rescue work together to locate youth who had become lost in the woods

On August 4, 2026, at approximately 2 am the Elk Valley RCMP were contacted by the mother of a 14-year-old youth reporting that her son had entered a wooded area in Fernie and could not be located. Family and friends of the youth had been searching for him for over three hours to no avail, so the RCMP were contacted.
Elk Valley RCMP frontline officers responded and were assisted by Cranbrook Police Dog Services. An RCMP drone operator was also requested along with Fernie Search and Rescue members.
A search was conducted for multiple hours. Just before daybreak the RCMP drone operator confirmed that they had been able to locate the youth, and he was assisted out of the wooded area.

The youth, who had by that time been in the woods for multiple hours, was exhibiting symptoms of hypothermia and was attended to by an RCMP medic before being transferred to the BC Ambulance Service for transportation to the Elk Valley Hospital. The youth has been released from the hospital and is expected to make a full recovery.
The incident is a great example of the vital partnerships that exist in our community and how the RCMP and our partner agencies work together to keep our communities safe.

Elk Valley RCMP want to advise our communities about scams occurring recently to people living in the Elk Valley area.
Scammers are sending out messages (photo attached as an example) that violation tickets have been issued to owners with a link to click to pay. These are falsified traffic violations with false officer and court info attached.
The RCMP does not send messages of this type at any time. A violation ticket is issued in person and will never be issued by text message or email. Do not click these sorts of scam links and do not provide your personal details, banking information, or social insurance number.
You can contact BC Crimestoppers at 1-800-222-8477 to report these or other scam messages.

Elk Valley RCMP want to remind residents and visitors to the Elk Valley to be safe while riding bicycles in all our communities.
Many of our officers are avid cyclists and we want to encourage you to enjoy cycling in the Elk Valley but to do so in a safe manner following these safety reminders:
Bikes are not to be ridden on sidewalks or on crosswalks. If you want to cross at a crosswalk with your bike you should dismount, cross on foot, then resume riding on the roadway as normal.
While on a bike you must obey traffic laws. Stop at stop signs, yield when directed, and obey traffic lights.
Wear a properly fitted helmet at all times while cycling. You might be a legend on two wheels, but accidents can happen at any time and can be beyond your control.
Cycling in a careless manner or riding in a manner that leads to an accident could result in you being issued a violation ticket.
We want our residents and visitors to enjoy our amazing communities and there are few better ways to do that than on a bike. Just remember to ride safely, following the rules of the road, and wearing proper protective equipment.

A reminder to those travelling through the Elk Valley with boats, kayaks, paddleboards or any recreational watercraft.
The boat inspection check stop West of Sparwood on Highway 3 is a mandatory stop for anyone transporting a watercraft while heading West through the Elk Valley.
Failing to stop at the check stop could lead to BC Conservation Officers or RCMP officers issuing a $690.00 ticket under the BC Wildlife Act to those failing to comply.
If you are transporting a watercraft into the Elk Valley region, please do your part to keep our lakes and other bodies of water free from invasive species by stopping as directed.
