Today we're celebrating our very own Medical Officer, Lieutenant Melissa Mills-Hutton! 🩺🚒

Whether she's looking after the crew, sharing her medical knowledge, putting out fires, or keeping everyone on their toes, Melissa is always ready to lend a hand!

But let's not forget her other very important title — SFD's official Head of Baked Goods! 🧁 From her delicious treats to her skills on the fireground, Melissa has a way of taking care of the crew in more ways than one!

We're lucky to have her as part of our fire family, and we hope she has a fantastic birthday!

🍂 Happy Thanksgiving from the Springhill Fire Department!

As you head out to enjoy the long weekend, we wish everyone safe travels. Please slow down, stay alert, and remember to slow down and move over for emergency vehicles stopped along the roadside. A little extra caution can make a big difference for those working to keep others safe.

This Thanksgiving, we’re especially thankful for those answering the call this weekend, for the community we are proud to serve, and for the families who love and support us while we do what we do.

We’re also grateful for our mutual aid partners who stand alongside us when the call comes in. The teamwork, support, and camaraderie between departments make a difference, and we’re thankful to have you in our corner.

And to each of our brothers and sisters who wear the Springhill Fire Department crest with pride, thank you for your dedication, your commitment, and for always showing up for one another and our community.

🏁 Ride for Faron — Ride for a Cause 🏁

On Saturday, November 7th, we’re proud to join forces with the Cobequid Off Highway Vehicle Club for a ride that means a little more.

This ride will honour the memory of Faron Young, a longtime club president, passionate trail rider, and someone who took great pride in the safety and enjoyment of our local trails.

Faron’s love for the trails and his community made this the perfect way to carry on his legacy. The ride will include a stop at the Cobequid Pass Flag Pole, where a memorial site will be established in Faron’s honour — a place for friends, family, and fellow riders to remember him for years to come.

For Springhill Fire Department, this ride is also helping us work toward an important goal: purchasing a 6-wheel-drive rescue side-by-side to improve our ability to reach and assist people in need throughout our trail system and surrounding areas.

We know Faron would be proud to see his passion for trail safety helping make our community safer.

All proceeds will go directly toward the purchase of the rescue side-by-side.

It’s Fire Prevention Week™ — October 4–10, 2026!
This year’s theme, “Charge Into Fire Safety™. Safe Charging Is a Superpower,” is all about the everyday charging habits that can help reduce the risk of lithium-ion battery fires.

Phones, tablets, laptops, power tools, e-bikes, toys — rechargeable devices are everywhere. Knowing how to charge them safely is an important part of protecting your home and your family.

🔥🚒 A Great Night with the Springhill Girl Guides! 🚒🔥

A big thank you to the Springhill Girl Guides for spending Monday evening with us at the Springhill Fire Department!

Lieutenant Melissa welcomed the group and kicked things off by sharing what it’s like to be a woman in the fire service. Firefighters Adrianna, Liza and Kyla joined in to share their own experiences, how they became involved in firefighting, and even their favourite types of calls and firefighting.

Then we put the Guides to the test! We went around the room and asked everyone to tell us the first thing that came to mind when they heard “fire safety.” The answers came quickly — escape plans, smoke alarms, turning off appliances, calling firefighters and so much more. 👏

We talked about how all of those answers are important, but one of the most important parts of fire safety is them and what they know. Knowing what to do in an emergency, who to call, how to get out safely, and understanding that a firefighter in full gear — even though they may look and sound a little different — is there to help.

Of course, no trip to the fire station would be complete without exploring the trucks! 🚒 The evening wrapped up with a full tour of the apparatus bay, a closer look at our equipment and, naturally, a look at the Jaws of Life.

Judging by the questions, enthusiasm and a few very interested faces around the trucks, we think there may be some future junior firefighters coming up through the ranks! 👩‍🚒🔥

🎉🚒 DOUBLE TROUBLE AT SPRINGHILL FIRE! 🚒🎉

It’s a two-for-one birthday at the Springhill Fire Department as we celebrate Fire Chief Matthew Ward and Deputy Chief Travis Spence!
These two spend plenty of time keeping the rest of us organized, making the tough calls, and occasionally pretending the shenanigans around the fire hall are completely under control.

We appreciate everything they bring to the department — especially the patience required to keep this crew pointed in roughly the right direction!

🚒 Only 2 days until Fire Prevention Week kicks off! 🚒
Sparky has been getting a little rowdy with our firefighters lately… and he’s ready to bring the energy!
Next week, we’re “Charging Into Fire Safety” and focusing on an important fire threat in our homes: lithium-ion batteries. From phones and tablets to e-bikes, scooters, tools, and other devices, these batteries are everywhere, and using or charging them improperly can lead to dangerous fires.
We’ve got a jam-packed week full of fun opportunities to interact, get involved, and learn more about fire safety! Be sure to follow along and join us throughout the week as we bring fire prevention education to life.
Charge into safety:
🔋 Use the charger that came with your device or one approved by the manufacturer.
🔋 Never charge damaged, swollen, or overheating batteries.
🔋 Keep charging devices away from beds, couches, and other flammable materials.
🔋 Don’t leave batteries charging unattended or overnight.
🔋 Give your devices plenty of ventilation while they charge.
🔋 If a battery becomes unusually hot, swells, leaks, or gives off an odor, stop using it and move away from the device.

And remember the basics: test your smoke alarms monthly, keep exits clear, have a home fire escape plan, and know two ways out of every room.

The Springhill Fire Department extends our deepest condolences to Mark Long’s family, friends, and everyone at Cracked Armour during this incredibly difficult time.

Mark was a strong advocate for the mental health and well-being of first responders, and his support of volunteer firefighters meant a great deal to our community. He understood that wearing the uniform comes with challenges regardless of whether someone serves as a career or volunteer firefighter, and he worked to ensure those who serve without a paycheque were not overlooked or forgotten.

Through Cracked Armour, Mark helped bring recognition, understanding, and support to first responders when they needed it most. His advocacy reached far beyond what could ever be measured, and his loss will be felt throughout the first responder community.

Perhaps one of the most meaningful ways we can honour Mark is to continue the message he worked so hard to share: look out for one another, lean on your peers, and never be afraid to reach out.

From all of us at the Springhill Fire Department, our thoughts are with everyone who knew, loved, served alongside, and was helped by Mark.

Rest easy, Mark. Your advocacy mattered, your work made a difference, and you will not be forgotten. ❤️‍🩹

It is with broken hearts, that we regretfully inform you all that our founder and best friend, Mark Long, passed away yesterday from a sudden medical condition. We know he has touched more lives than anyone will ever know, and will be missed by many. Please continue to support each other, lean on your peers. That’s how Mark thought we all needed to heal. ❤️

Today, the Springhill Fire Department joins our members and our community in recognizing the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation.

We honour the children who never returned home, the Survivors of residential schools, their families, and the generations who continue to carry their stories.

Today is an opportunity to listen, to learn, and to reflect on the experiences of Indigenous peoples and the lasting impact of residential schools.

Within our department and throughout the community we are privileged to serve, we stand together in a spirit of respect, compassion, and understanding.

May we carry that spirit beyond today—in how we listen, how we learn, and how we treat one another.
