💚 June is PTSD Awareness Month 💚

Firefighters and first responders are trained to run toward emergencies, face difficult situations, and help others on some of the worst days of their lives.

What people don't always see are the calls that stay with us long after the sirens are silent.

Traumatic events can leave lasting impacts on mental health. PTSD is not a sign of weakness—it is an injury that can affect anyone who has experienced trauma. For firefighters, paramedics, police officers, dispatchers, healthcare workers, military members, and countless others, the effects can be invisible but very real.

This month, we stand with those living with PTSD and those supporting loved ones through their journey. We also remember those we have lost and encourage anyone who is struggling to reach out for help. Asking for support is one of the bravest things a person can do.

At the Springhill Fire Department, we know that taking care of our community also means taking care of each other.

You are not alone. 💚

These books have become a huge hit with local kids, helping teach important fire safety lessons in a fun, engaging, and memorable way. From home escape plans to smoke alarms and calling 911, the impact these books have on our young community members is something we’re proud to be part of each year.

🚨 COMMUNITY SAFETY ALERT 🚨

We are sharing an important community alert regarding suspected toxic street drugs and multiple suspected overdoses reported in Cumberland County.

Please exercise caution, look out for one another, and be aware of the risks associated with illicit substances.

If you suspect an overdose, call 911 immediately and administer naloxone if available.

Unverified , June 1, 2026: Fentanyl suspected to contain high levels of toxicity causing multiple suspected overdoses in Cumberland County

We have received a report from a community source regarding fentanyl suspected to contain high levels of toxicity causing multiple suspected overdoses in Cumberland County.

How to Stay Safe: Let someone know, start low, and go slow.

✔ Do NOT use drugs alone – Use with someone you trust or call the National Overdose Response Service (NORS) at 1-888-688-NORS. They will stay on the phone with you while you use, so they can get you help if needed.

✔ Start with a very small amount – These drugs are stronger than what people may expect or may be used to.

✔ Have naloxone ready – Naloxone can help with opioid overdoses, but it will NOT work on other substances, such as benzodiazepines. Even if you're unsure what substance caused an overdose, always give naloxone—it won’t harm the person, but it may help if opioids are involved.

✔ Call 911 immediately for any overdose – Even if naloxone is used, emergency help is still needed.

✔ Expect the unexpected – Always assume street drugs may not be what you think and contain drugs different from or stronger than you expect. Pills that look like real medicine could be fake.

✔ Avoid mixing drugs – Combining opioids, benzodiazepines, and alcohol greatly increases the risk of overdose and death.

✔ Go to an overdose prevention site – If available in your area, these sites provide a safe space to use drugs with medical staff who can help in case of an emergency.

If someone overdoses:

· Call 911 immediately – Tell them someone is unresponsive.
· Give naloxone if you have it. More than one dose may be needed if high potency opioids are involved. If there are no opioids, naloxone will be ineffective but will not cause harm – give it anyway.
· Stay with them and make sure they can breathe.
· If they stop breathing, perform CPR until help arrives.

🚒❤️ Relay For Life 2026 — Complete!

What an incredible day for the Springhill Firehouse Fighters.

As Team Captain, I could not be more proud of our department members, our families, our supporters, and the entire Springhill community. Together, we came together for a cause that touches so many lives, and the results were beyond anything we imagined.

Our original fundraising goal was $2,500. Thanks to the generosity of our community, our boot drive supporters, and donors from across Canada, we didn’t just reach that goal — we smashed it.

💜 Final Total Raised: $3,390.78 💜

This was our first year participating in Relay For Life, and what a way to start. Every dollar raised will help support the Canadian Cancer Society’s work in research, advocacy, support programs, and hope for those affected by cancer.

🚒❤️ Today is the day.

Today, the Springhill Firehouse Fighters will take to the track at Relay For Life, walking in our freshly cleaned bunker gear to raise awareness of firefighter cancer and to support everyone whose lives have been touched by this disease.

We are honoured to walk alongside survivors, caregivers, families, friends, and supporters who continue to show incredible strength and determination in the face of cancer.

Thanks to the generosity of the Springhill community and donations from supporters across Canada, our team has raised $3,288.78 for the Canadian Cancer Society. Every dollar represents hope, support, research, and a commitment to a future with fewer cancer diagnoses and better outcomes for those affected.

As many of you know, this month has been heartbreaking for fire departments across Nova Scotia. Today, we also carry the Kentville Volunteer Fire Department in our hearts. While we did not personally know Engineer 1st Class / Lieutenant Joel Neily, his loss has been felt throughout the firefighting community. Today, as we walk, we will take a moment to remember him, his family, his department, and all firefighters who have answered the call before us.

This walk is about more than fundraising. It is about remembering, honouring, supporting, and standing together.

From our firehouse to yours, thank you for helping us make a difference.

This has been an incredibly difficult week for the fire service across Nova Scotia. ❤️‍🩹

To our brothers and sisters in Bridgetown, Abercrombie, Eureka, and every department feeling the weight of these losses — please know you are not alone.

In the fire service, every loss is shared. It reaches far beyond one station or one community. We grieve together, we stand together, and we support one another like family.

Please check in on your fellow firefighters, friends, and loved ones. Lean on each other. Have the conversations. Ask how someone is doing, and truly listen.

If you are struggling, hurting, or simply need someone to talk to, reach out. Our department is here for our fire family, and if we can help point you toward support or resources, message us anytime.

Take care of one another. We’ll get through this together.

The fire service across Nova Scotia is extremely hurting this week ❤️‍🩹

Our brothers and sisters from Bridgetown Fire Department has tragically lost one of their members while battling a wildfire in Annapolis County.

The Abercrombie Fire Department in Pictou County has also tragically lost an active member, unexpectedly this week.

The Eureka Fire Department in Pictou County has also lost a longtime member, unexpectedly this week.

Our thoughts are with all these stations, their members, families, friends and communities, the fire service truly has a broken heart this week.

Please don’t forget, check in on one another because you are not alone and it is okay to ask for help.

We’ll take it from here.
