Is it really February?! Our crew on the water this morning enjoyed calm seas and sunshine. 🌞 A true treat!

We visited several stunning BC Marine Trails campsites in north Howe Sound, to contemplate shoreline approaches and campsite layouts, to be prepared to respond to emergencies at these recreation sites. πŸ•οΈ

If you run into trouble on Howe Sound, we're ready to come to the rescue.

Here are a few key safety tips:

πŸ›Ÿ Wear a lifejacket, always! You and your family.

🚨 Call for Help immediately: use channel 16 on VHF marine radio or call *16, #727 or simply dial 9-1-1 on your cell.

πŸ—ΊοΈ Familiarize yourself with the area you visit - note commercial traffic zones, remote areas that lack cellular coverage.

🦺 Bring Required Safety Equipment: Test prior to departure, replace expired items.

πŸͺ¨ Be aware of submerged objects: Rocks, stumps, log strikes can damage a boat's hull or motor which can result in injury or death.

🌀️ Leave a sail plan with loved ones, check the weather and tides before departing. Don't forget about the wind forecast!

πŸŒ… Be mindful of shorter daylight. If you're boating or paddling at night, have the appropriate and required lights. Be seen!

🚨 At 3:46PM today, our station responded to a pan-pan for 9 standup paddle boarders who were out for a downwinder from Squamish to Porteau Cove, but got stranded at Zorro Bay due to inclement weather.

The SUPers were experienced and in appropriate winter paddling gear. They waited out the weather for 3 hours, to no avail. They made the smart decision to call for help while there was still daylight.

Our crew responded and after a technical shore approach, retrieved half the group and their boards for transport to Porteau Cove, and returned promptly for the remaining individuals waiting at Zorro Bay.

⛑️ If you run into trouble on the ocean, call for help immediately: use channel 16 on VHF marine radio or call *16, #727 or simply dial 9-1-1 on your cell.

Think D&D, but with boats and charts. 3 boats, complex rescue missions, cooperation. Decisions were made and learning achieved!!

Last night's towing practice looked almost otherworldly under red night lights. πŸ‘½

Did you know... Red light doesn't constrict the human eye's pupil as much as white light, allowing vessel operators to maintain better night vision for spotting other details on the water. Fun fact!

Also makes for really neat photos!

Our crews train for all kinds of emergency scenarios we might experience on the water. This includes practicing for a navigation failure onboard our own boat. Here our crew simulated a full navigation black out in the dead of night and had to navigate their way back to base using paper charts, compass and navigation lights.
