A Night of Global Connections, Personal Growth & New Beginnings!

Our Rotary meeting last night was extra special as we celebrated two incredible exchange student journeys and welcomed a new member to our Rotary family!

Welcome back, Clara! After an unforgettable exchange year in Burgos, Spain, Clara shared stories of cultural discoveries, amazing food, new friendships, rugby, horseback riding, and travelling to 10 countries across Europe! One of her most memorable experiences was seeing Barcelona’s magnificent Sagrada Família in person. Her year was filled with adventure, personal growth, and discovering more about herself.

Meet Maiko! Arriving in August from La Pampa, Argentina, Maiko is spending the year experiencing life in Canada while attending high school. He shared a glimpse into Argentine culture, from traditional foods like empanadas and milanesas to tango, gaucho traditions, family card games, and a love of football! A sports enthusiast who enjoys swimming and soccer, Maiko is making the most of this exciting international adventure.

A special connection between our two exchange students? Both Clara and Maiko have a twin! For both of them, their Rotary exchange has been an opportunity to step out on their own, discover their independence, and explore who they are as individuals. Sometimes, finding yourself means travelling halfway around the world!

Rotary Youth Exchange is about so much more than visiting another country. It’s about building confidence, embracing new cultures, forming lifelong friendships, and discovering just how much the world has to offer.

And one more reason to celebrate - welcome, Carm! Carm was officially inducted as a Rotarian last night, and we are delighted to welcome her to our Rotary family!

Three wonderful reasons to celebrate, one fantastic evening of fellowship, and so many reminders of what makes Rotary special.

🌿 A Garden with a Purpose. A Legacy with Heart. 💙

The Clarice West-Hobbs Contemplative Garden at St. Catharines Hospital was created through the vision of longtime Rotarian Clarice West Hobbs - giving patients, families, visitors and healthcare staff a beautiful space to pause, reflect and recharge.

We’re incredibly proud of what this garden has become and grateful to the many people and organizations who helped make Clarice’s vision a reality - including Delta Bingo Sponsors Association of St Catharines, RTOERO, RWTO/OERO, Friendship Force Niagara, Rotary District 7090, our local Rotary clubs, Gauld Nurseries, Rain Your Way, Landscapes by Bill Nieuwenhuyzen, and so many generous donors and volunteers.

Thank you to everyone who has helped this special garden grow. 🌱❤️

🤔 Did you know: our rotary club created and maintains the Clarice West-Hobbs Contemplative Garden at the Marotta Family Hospital in St. Catharines? We sure do!

Following the passing of our beloved member Clarice, our club funded and created this beautiful garden to fulfil her vision and create a beautiful space of respite for patients, family, staff, and visitors.

It is about 20,000 square feet and when it was first created, we hand watered it every day to get it going. 🌷👩‍🌾

Thanks to help from Gauld Nurseries and Landscapes, we were able to have the grand opening in September 2023!

Just one example of how we serve our community with care and compassion. ❤️

Welcome our Rotary Youth Exchange student, Maico!!

Maico arrived in St. Catharines in late August from General Pico, Argentina, and is currently attending Grade 11 at Governor Simcoe Secondary School.

Throughout his exchange year, he is staying with 4 host families across our community.

Coming from a strong Rotary family with a Rotarian mom, an exchange-alum brother, and a history of hosting students back home - Maico is eager to embrace new experiences.

At school, he is focusing on economics, business, and his dream of becoming an entrepreneur. And, on top of playing soccer and basketball back home, he has joined Governor Simcoe's football team and is taking up lacrosse!

Maico sees this year as an incredible opportunity to broaden his horizons, strengthen his leadership and decision-making skills, and refine his English.

Let’s give Maico a warm St. Catharines welcome! Be sure to say hello when you see him at an upcoming Rotary meeting or community event!
