Child abuse is any form of physical, emotional, and/or sexual mistreatment or lack of care that causes injury or emotional damage to a child.

Friday morning Her Honour welcomed members of the Newfoundland and Labrador Women’s Institutes (NLWI) to Government House.

The NLWI is an organization that traces its roots to a service league formed to help those impacted by the tsunami on the south coast of Newfoundland in 1929 and has carried on in the spirit of volunteerism, community service, youth outreach and more.

During the ceremony, student Julian Flynn was named as the recipient of a scholarship from NLWI.

Congratulations Julian on this honour and thank you to the NLWI for your ongoing service and engagement with our communities.

Friday morning, Her Honour welcomed members of the Royal Canadian Legion Newfoundland and Labrador Command to Government House.

Her Honour signed a proclamation marking the period leading up to Remembrance Day, after which NL Command members presented her with the first poppy in our province for 2026.

The poppy flag was then raised outside and will fly through Remembrance Day. All flags at Government House are currently at half-mast to mark the tragedy that occurred at Canadian Forces Base Wainwright.

The annual Poppy Campaign is a time of reflection and remembrance of those who have served our country in uniform. Funds raised during the campaign are used by the Legion to support veterans across Newfoundland and Labrador.

Congratulations to writer/director Wanda Nolan and everyone who was involved in the short film, “The Muse”. This film recently received the Best Documentary award at the New York Shorts International Film Festival.

On Thursday morning Their Honours hosted a ceremony at Government House recognizing distinguished service to community, to province and to country.

Long service and special awards were given to members of the Canadian Corps of Commissionaires Newfoundland and Labrador recognizing their long-term commitment and dedication to their duties.

In addition, four individuals were presented with a bronze forget-me-not on behalf of sculptor Morgan MacDonald to recognize significant contributions to the repatriation of the Newfoundland Unknown Soldier.

Their Honours also presented one King Charles III Coronation Medal on behalf of the Canadian Mental Health Association NL.

Congratulations to each recipient and thank you for sharing this day with us at Government House.

October 19-23 is The Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award – Canada Awareness Week.

It highlights the international award program for young people, emphasizing recreation, skills development, adventurous journey, volunteer service and achievement.

This morning, to mark this special week, Her Honour hosted a group of students who are involved with the program, along with program leaders. Together they spoke about the program and how it can impact and benefit young people and the world around us. Her Honour serves as Honorary Patron of the Duke of Edinburgh International Award in Newfoundland and Labrador.

Following their conversation Her Honour joined the delegation outside for a photograph with the Duke of Edinburgh Award flag. Flags at Government House continue to fly at half-mast to mark the tragedy that occurred at Canadian Forces Base Wainwright in Alberta on October 17.

Sunday afternoon Her Honour participated in a fashion show event in collaboration with The Vimy Boutique in Spaniard’s Bay support of programs and services at the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 9.

In her remarks she spoke of the importance of remembrance and of service to veterans and all those who serve our country in uniform. Her Honour also thanked the volunteers who showed an incredible example of community coming together to support the Legion as we recognize its 100 year legacy of serving Canadians.

Thank you to Mary and Bob Gushue and family, Legion Branch 9 and The Vimy Boutique for the support for their community and for a great afternoon in Spaniard’s Bay.

St. Luke’s Anglican Church in Port de Grave is celebrating a 200-year anniversary in 2026.

Congratulations to St. Luke’s on two centuries of service through faith, hope and giving back to each other in community.
