June 21 is National Indigenous Peoples Day across Canada. It is a day to honour and celebrate the rich and vibrant culture, heritage and diversity of Indigenous Peoples.

Reconciliation continues to be a generational task that must be lived and practiced every day. Deep listening and learning about Indigenous cultures shows respect to the First Peoples of our country. We all have a collective responsibility to show that respect and to encourage others to listen and learn.

Tonight, Government House will light up orange to recognize this day and all it stands for.

Yesterday at the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary Stables on the grounds of Government House, Their Honours joined RNC Chief Patrick Roche for a Passing of the Reins ceremony to welcome the newest RNC Mount.

Through an incredibly generous gift from the Crosbie Family, Robert officially joined the RNC Mounted Unit.

Government House is so honoured to share space on the grounds with the officers and horses of the Mounted Unit and to see them out for their daily patrol, interacting with people and supporting law enforcement in our communities.

Welcome, Robert!

Today Their Honours and Government House staff had an opportunity to visit Presentation Convent in St. John’s to learn about the history and legacy of the Presentation Sisters. As a part of the visit they viewed the Veiled Virgin statue, sculpted by acclaimed Italian artist Giovanni Strazza (1818-1875).

Dedicated members of the public service support programs and deliver services that affect our everyday lives, all while keeping our communities safer. To all members of the public service, thank you for everything you continue to do for the people of our province and of our country.
