Landfall Trust

Landfall Trust Landfall Trust oversees the 200-year-old Kent Cottage and provides seasonal artist, writer and musician-in-residence programs. See www.landfalltrustnl.org.

When the cottage is not in use for the residencies, it is rented out as an artistic retreat. The Landfall Trust is a registered charity established in 2005 through the legacy of the late Bradley Jacob Folensbee, Jr., (Jake) of Seattle, Washington, who purchased the Landfall property in 1953. The Trust’s Board of Directors serves on a volunteer basis and is supported by an Advisory Committee repr

esenting heritage preservation, environmental protection, the visual and literary arts, the surrounding community and its history, finance and fund development, facilities and architecture. All Directors and Advisory Committee members have an association with the community of Brigus and share Jake's vision for the preservation and conservation of Landfall and availing its facilities to individuals and organizations complimenting the arts and humanities. The Trust is supported by members, donations, the Landfall Press and, when not in use for cultural and heritage activity, the cottage is rented as a pristine and historic vacation retreat; essential activities supporting the Trust’s long-term goal of sustainability.

Announcing Landfall Trust’s lineup of artist-in-residence participants for summer 2026! Next up is the band Swimming 🎉

Their bio:

Swimming keeps its head above water by conjuring mathy, Midwestern-emo vibes, all the way from the eastern reaches of Canada. Angular drums and noodly guitar work lay a bed for Swimming’s yearning lyrics, which paint pictures of the band’s upbringing and experience in Newfoundland. Their debut LP “That’s OK” gained traction in 2021 with editorial nods from Spotify and Apple Music. Spending the following years touring Canada, the members of Swimming have worked diligently to shine a spotlight on the thriving music scene that they have helped cultivate in their home province. Their sophomore record “Old” was released in 2025 through No Funeral & Barely There Records and spent several weeks on Canadian college radio charts.

Swimming will be playing at the Brigus Blueberry Festival this coming Sunday, August 9th at 12:40PM! Come on out and support local music!

Many thanks to MusicNL for their support of the musician residencies. We’re proud to be a part of supporting these excellent musicians!

Announcing Landfall Trust’s lineup of artist-in-residence participants for summer 2026! Next up is visual artist, Emily Promise Allison 🎉

Emily’s bio:

Emily is a Canadian conceptual artist who uses photography, sculpture, and performance to create images that embrace surreal, metaphysical, and dreamlike qualities. She regards the imagination as a fundamental sense that allows us to find or create magic within systems regulated by logic; celebrating the strange nature of existence and the absurdity of life.

Emily will be offering a free public open studio and chat about her work at Kent Cottage in Brigus on July 18th, 1-4pm! (Parking available on Water Street. Please note there is no direct road access to the cottage, and visitors will need to walk a few minutes across grass to access the space. Unfortunately, the cottage is not wheelchair accessible.)

Many thanks to The Rooms for their support of the visual artist residencies! We’re proud to be a part of supporting your work, Emily!

Announcing Landfall Trust’s lineup of artist-in-residence participants for summer 2026! Next up is writer-in-residence, Amanda Hull 🎉 Amanda’s getting some June sunshine, and perhaps some lilacs blooming on the Kent Cottage property?

Amanda’s bio:

Originally from Little Bay Islands, Newfoundland, Amanda Marie Hull now lives in Conception Bay South with her husband, Paul, and their fur-child, Sookie. She is the Executive Administrator of Conservation Visions, a St. John’s-based environmental think tank, and a doctoral student in English at Memorial University, where her research and creative work explore ecology, place, memory, identity, and the stories people tell about home. Her recent writing has appeared in Paragon, the Journal of Newfoundland and Labrador Studies, and Riddle Fence. An articulate and imaginative eco-socialist, Amanda loves books, wine, Sunday brunch with friends, and metaphorical rabbit holes. Despite evidence to the contrary, she believes the world is still a good place, and that storytelling may save it yet.

Again, many thanks to the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, Memorial University and Breakwater Books for their support of the writer’s residencies! We’re proud to be a part of supporting your work, Amanda!
