Today, our hearts are with our brothers and sisters at the Edmonton Institution for Women following the tragic loss of two correctional officers and an offender during a transfer.

Across correctional organizations, uniforms may differ, but the bond we share is the same. We understand the weight of this profession, the sacrifices made, and the courage it takes to serve every day.

We stand in solidarity with the families, friends, and colleagues affected by this unimaginable tragedy. May those who lost their lives in the line of duty be remembered with honour, respect, and gratitude.

From one correctional family to another, we are holding you in our thoughts today and in the difficult days ahead. 🖤

Correctional Service Canada (CSC) is deeply saddened by the tragic loss of two officers and an offender in a tragic accident during a transfer from Edmonton Institution for Women. We extend our deepest condolences to the families, loved ones, friends, and colleagues during this incredibly difficult time.

Our colleagues who lost their lives in the line of duty served Canadians with professionalism, dedication, and courage. Their commitment to public safety and to CSC's mission leaves a lasting legacy, and we will ensure their invaluable contributions to our country are never forgotten.

15 chairs and 2 wheelchair-accessible picnic tables were handcrafted by the inmates at Bishop’s Falls Correctional Centre under the direction of Shops Supervisor Mark Noseworthy.

These beautiful pieces will be enjoyed by campers and visitors to Max Simms Camp for many years to come. A great example of the positive contributions and meaningful work being done within our correctional facilities. 👏

**July 8, 2026 marks the end of an era.**

Today, the Staff White House at HMP was taken down.

To many, it may have just been a building. But to generations of staff, it was much more than that. It was where recruits trained, stress management sessions were held, countless socials took place, and friendships were built.

Most importantly, it was a place where correctional staff came together. It fostered camaraderie, teamwork, solidarity, and the bonds that helped us get through some of the toughest days on the job.

Buildings come and go, but the memories made within those walls will remain with those who spent time there. Thank you to everyone who helped make the Staff White House a special place over the years.

The building may be gone, but the spirit of the people who gathered there will always be part of HMP's history.

For many across Canada, July 1 is a day of celebration. Here in Newfoundland and Labrador, it is also a day of solemn remembrance.

Today, we honour the brave Newfoundlanders and Labradorians who served our country, especially the men of the 1st Newfoundland Regiment who fought at Beaumont-Hamel during the Battle of the Somme.

On July 1, 1916, 801 members of the regiment courageously advanced into battle. The next morning, only 68 were able to answer the roll call.

Their courage, sacrifice, and unwavering devotion will never be forgotten.

As we celebrate Canada Day, let us also take a moment to remember those who gave so much for future generations.
