The origin of the first trans-Atlantic wireless message – the Marconi Centre in Poldhu, Cornwall - has been nominated for a World Origin Site Award!

As the site where Guglielmo Marconi received this message in 1901, Signal Hill National Historic Site sends our congratulations! Poldhu Amateur Radio Club is hosting a special presentation to celebrate the 125th anniversary of the first trans-Atlantic wireless message.

Access to Cape Spear Lighthouse National Historic Site is temporarily closed due to weather impacts on the site’s infrastructure. Parking areas, trails, and other facilities will be closed until further notice. This closure will remain in place until conditions are deemed safe for public access to the site.

There's so much to be thankful for this Thanksgiving (and always)! We're thankful for a great season because our team members got to help so many of our visitors make great lasting memories at our National Historic Sites! We're also thankful for our colleagues who make our team work as great as it can be!

Tomorrow, October 9, is the last day of the operating season here at Signal Hill National Historic Site for the 2026 season 😔

We've had an amazing year which was particularly special as the 75th anniversary as a national historic site. Thank you to everyone for coming to enjoy our site and all the exciting activities and events we had over the summer!

Don't fret - you can still visit the site all you want, but keep in mind that our facilities (including the bathrooms) will be closed until next season.

Guglielmo Marconi received the first transatlantic wireless signal on December 12, 1901. The message came all the way from England and was simply the letter "s" in Morse Code.

Do you know morse code? You can try it out at the Signal Hill Visitor Centre and communicate with your buddies!

Are you ready for another special event in celebration of Signal Hill's 75th year as a national historic site? Then save the date for October 3rd, it's a history showcase!

Join us at 2 pm in the Visitor Centre Annex (Signal Room) to hear a public lecture from Parks Canada historian Angela Duffett! Angela will share research into Signal Hill’s modern history, beyond the well-known colonial-era military battles and Marconi’s historic transmission. Learn how locals, visitors, and Parks Canada alike have all played a part in shaping our views of the Hill.
