❗Unauthorized Fires Put People and Property at Risk ❗

As warmer weather approaches, the City of St. John’s and the St. John’s Regional Fire Department are reminding residents that open air fires are not permitted without the required permits and approvals.

This includes:

🔥 Bonfires
🔥 Campfires
🔥 Brush fires
🔥 Backyard burning
🔥 Any fire that is not fully enclosed in an approved fire pit or appliance

Even a small fire can spread quickly, especially in wooded areas or dry conditions.

Parents and guardians are encouraged to talk to children and youth about the dangers of unauthorized fires and remind them that fires should never be started without adult supervision and the proper permits.

If you see unauthorized burning activity, contact Access St. John’s at 311. If there is an immediate risk to people, property, or the environment, call 911.

UL Solutions Warns of Unauthorized UL Marks on LED Surface-mounted Luminaires

St. John’s – The St. John’s Regional Fire Department wishes to advise all citizens of the following consumer product that has not been evaluated by UL Solutions to the appropriate safety standards.

Reason for Recall: Unauthorized certification marks were applied to certain LED surface-mounted luminaires, which have not been evaluated by UL Solutions to the appropriate safety standards, posing potential electrical and fire hazards.

Reason for Corrective Action: UL Solutions (NYSE: ULS), a global leader in applied safety science, issued a public notice regarding LED Linear Highbay Light products sold by Clearspace at 1 Adelaide St. E. #3000, Toronto, Ontario, M5C 2V9, which bear unauthorized UL certification marks for the United States and Canada and may pose safety risks.

Action Required: “The presence of unauthorized UL Marks on these lighting products is a serious concern,” said Alessio Dellanoce, vice president and general manager of the Appliances, HVAC and Lighting group at UL Solutions. “We urge anyone who has purchased these devices to remove them from service immediately and replace them with properly certified products.”

Lighting performance, energy efficiency and safety testing can help manufacturers meet the demands of the lighting market while mitigating risks associated with innovation and evolving regulations. UL Solutions’ safety testing for LEDs evaluates lighting products for issues such as shock hazards, risk of fire and health concerns that could be caused by exposure to the electromagnetic radiation produced by these light sources.

The affected LED surface-mounted luminaires bear an unauthorized UL certification mark and the following on the product labels:

• Clearspace Task Lighting
• “5140 Yonge 2220”, or “171 East Liberty”, or “Suite 808” or “Clearspace-33 Yonge 610”
• Ratings 120-347VAC, CCT: 4000K
• cUL & DLC Listed

The City is currently accepting applications for the full-time permanent position of Fire Equipment Procurement Technician with the St. John's Regional Fire Department (SJRFD).

Reporting to the Deputy Chief, Operations, this position is primarily responsible for overseeing procurement and inventory of SJRFD clothing, PPE, equipment, and station supplies, including preparing tender documents, obtaining quotes for products and services, and managing the requisitioning process.

Yesterday, our department participated in Memorial University's Emergency Preparedness Expo to provide information and guidance on effective strategies for emergency preparedness. At the event, we engaged with attendees by sharing practical tips, distributing educational materials, and answering questions about how to stay safe and respond effectively during emergencies. Our goal was to help raise awareness about the importance of being prepared and to encourage everyone to take proactive steps to protect themselves, their families, and their communities.

Chief Colford was also invited to be one of the guest judges for their fourth Disaster Chef competition!

Lithium ion batteries power many of our everyday devices—from phones and tools to e bikes and vapes. When used correctly, they’re safe. When misused or damaged, they can cause fires, explosions, or serious injuries.
✅ Charge safely • Use the charger made for your device
• Plug directly into a wall outlet
• Never charge on beds, couches, or near flammable materials
✅ Store properly • Keep batteries at room temperature
• Avoid heat, cold, and direct sunlight
• Do not store loose batteries in pockets or bags
✅ Watch for warning signs • Swelling, overheating, popping sounds
• Strong chemical smell or smoke
➡️ Stop using the device immediately and move it to a safe area if this happens
✅ Handle with care • Never crush, puncture, or modify batteries
• Do not use damaged or recalled batteries
✅ Dispose responsibly • Do NOT place lithium ion batteries in household garbage
• Take them to an approved recycling or drop off location
🔥 Remember: Battery fires grow fast and can re ignite. If a battery catches fire, get too safety and call 911.
